99 cavalier eng to 96 cavalier car
Wednesday, February 11, 2009 6:57 PM
I have a 99 cavalier eng which I would like to put in a 96 cavalier car. I am looking for info on how to best achieve this at the lowest amount of cost. The information I know is that the intake manifolds changed in 98 and also the crank timing notch changed in which the timing mark is advanced. The heads should interchange, but when putting the 96 head on the compression raises up because the chamber is different where this might require burning premium gas, and this still does not address the 99 advanced timing notch on the crank. I have the complete car which the 99 eng came out of (my so flipped it), so any connectors I would need, I should have. The 96 eng was ran low on oil and is ready to throw a rod. I have not broke it down yet to see how much damage has been done to the crank and rods. Would it be better to purchase the correct crank and swap the heads on the 99 block, or can I possibly put the 99 eng in as is and splice the correct connectors in on the wiring harness and the reprogram the chip for the correct timing. One other note is that the 99 eng has no EGR but has the block off plate. If I use the 99 eng as is but change the crank and adapt the connectors can I add the EGR to the system so that the computer will be correct.
Please let me know.

since you have the donor car why dont you just swap over the engine and ecm /wiring, and be done.

I am not sure if I would have to replace everything inside the car or just replace the wiring harness from the firewall side of the engine compartment only. Do you know if the ecm will just plug and play on the inside or will the harness have to be changed also?
