New rack and pump for you, possibly a new steering shaft

If he's got a few extra bucks and the TSB has not been previously fixed for a knock in the steering column, the job is much easier to accomplish with the rack out. Just figured I'd let ya know, Saves quite a bit of time. Napa is now producing an upgraded shaft assembly too, so you dont have to go to the dealer for it anymore either.

Just a thought, preventative maintenance is always good, and another 60 bucks on top of something like a 500 dollar purchase for a rack and a pump is not that much more.

Step one:

Go to a dealership with the VIN number to the car and have it checked for recalls.

Take a chance that the power steering recall hasn't been done yet. Which actually, causes loss of power steering to the left and in some cases, unintended power steer to the right.

Yeah, definately check and see if the recall has ever been done. If it hasn't, they'll probably end up changing the steering rack. Free of charge.

ok guys i changed the r&p. fix the problem.. but now the air bag light is on. i'm thinkin when the steering broke and i turned the wheel i heard a click in the st. wheel.. could it be that i unconnected the link for the airbag? and if so can i fix it? also the st. wheel is a little off from straight. bout 11 o'clock position when the wheels are straight. can alignment cure that?? thanks for the help guys and gals..

You broke your Air bags clock spring
.. You didnt lock the steering wheel when you changed your steering gear, or got the alignment off when installing the intermediate shaft.

You can fix it but it requires a new clockspring assembly and removing the steering wheel and I believe the multifunction switch(?).
