In general... all years. 96-98 are worse than the 99-02, but I've seen both fail horribly with low oil levels...

A buddy of mine killed a 2001 Sunfire GT after only 8,000 kms... low oil and beating on it...

Does your girlfriend plan on driving it like she stole it? If not then I wouldn't worry about it. I mean I'd trust my wife with a 2.4L car because she doesn't treat a car like a POS.

I had 200,000k plus on my 2.4. It still ran like a champ, burned a little oil though lol

Mine leaks more than what it burns. I'm at about 160k miles, and have never had an oil issue. I run synthetic oil, and always make sure it is filled. At a minimum, check it once a month and you'll be fine.

The irony here is that, my car still uses less oil than my friends BMW. Even with the leak. (Which I have now fixed in a separate issue)

BTW, I've always drove my car like I stole it from the first day I got it (Bought used). And it is a 96'.
