Help needed on Swapping out old engine for new
Monday, June 15, 2009 5:15 PM
First off im not looking to get into all the swapping in a v6 or a ecotec(love toif sounds right n what intales) but more into swapping my old busted engine for the same engine. I was on my way home last week and broke the bairings on #1 connecting rod and you can hear it slapping around. the engine is totally rebuildable and I planning on doing it over the summer just cant do it right now.(would like to detail it and mod it so reason be). My option right now is to drop a running one into it for now and use that cause i need it up and going asap. My main questions are when i go to get the new one what do i gotta look for so its goes right in and i dont have problems with it cause its the wrong one. This family friend has located me a couple but they are as follows. One says it was from a 5 Speed rollover, another with Abs. ones from a grand am. and some others. I have a 2000 2.4twin cam with abs airconditioning, auto trans with OD. can the engines from a gear shift fit a auto(swapping on my auto trans) if im using most my parts can i just place the ac comp on the engine w/o it? Before i go rambling on what im getting at is what main thing do i need the new one to have for mine to swap smooth. any info beyond what i posted please ask ill be checking back alot. Any help would be great.

If it is the same engine it will work easily.

You can use an engine from a manual car.

IIRC, you need a 99-02 motor (the LD9 guys can tell you for sure--there are a couple of differences in the newer ones that make it a little bit of a hassle to swap between the variations).

As far as what tranny, you can just pull your flexplate and torque converter and swap them to the new engine. The engine itself doesn't change between manual or auto.
