Guys, in the Haynes manual it states 46 ft lbs of torque on the head bolts of a 2.2 0hv motor. Is this right?>?? seems very low to me!!
thanks!
ralph
Should also have a degree of a additional turn after that tq is reached so it will make it higher it's because the head bolts stretch
yeah, it states 90 degrees after that, I am jsut surprised its only 46 ft lbs
I can believe its. Its not like the 2.2 is a super high compression motor.
Yea I tore down a Detroit 60 series diesel engine. Head bolts had to be torqued to 210ft/lbs. cuz the compression is like almost 20-1
"It's called reading! Top to bottom, left to right... a group of words together is called a sentence. Take Tylenol for any headaches... Midol for any cramps."
You have to realize that 46 ft lbs plus 90 degrees could end up in excess of 90 ft lbs. It is the right spec.
ok, thanks. One more question for you guys. do any of these bolts go through water jackets??? Meaning do i need to put thread sealer on any of the threads???? or just use lube for accurate readings, thanks!!
Rich, there is no sealer on the new bolts man (felpro), i checked
I have always used permaseal in the past , kicks but. Should I use it???
where did you get fel-pro bolts without sealer? every set i've ever sold has it.well, in any event, EVERY bolt goes into a water jacket. so yes, sealer on them all.

great, thanks man. I got the set from rock-auto when I ordered the haynes and full headgasket set. the bolts were $19.95
well guys, everything is done., idles great, no leaks. head was checked out OK and new valves seals were put in.
thanks!!
Heads I just did on a 2.8L V6 were even less, like 33 or 35 ft lbs plus 90 degrees. Did a Escort that was around 45 ft lbs plus 90 degrees, then another 90 degrees. A cheater bar was quickly thrown into the mix on that last 90 degrees. As far as sealant on the threads the Fel Pro bolts for the 2.8 looked pretty bare. I used the loctite thread sealant myself on the head bolts.
auto zone bolyts have no selaer on the bolts
i replaced heads on a 99 grand am GT ram air 3.4L last week and the new fel pro bolts were non sealed
44lbs plus 90 degree turn
very tight, like i had to put all my weight on the bar to turn them this far, it feels like youre gonna break the bar or bolts off
but it doesnt happen
doesnt sound like alot of torque but wait til you try to go 90 degrees more
its alotttttt,,,,,,
EXTREMELY tight

You guys think thats tight? Do a Catera head job.
The specs are 26 ft/lbs plus 90 degrees, plus 90 degrees, plus 90 degrees, plus 15 degrees.
I had to use a great big leverage bar for those and once I was done torquing down both heads, I HAD to take a break. I was beat.
Haha, people don't realize how bad those 90 degrees will whoop you when they're just looking at the initial torque number.
