my 96 Cavalier will not turn over to start .It was running pretty good ,then when I parked it and came back out to start it,it would not turn over.
I jumped the starter terminals to see if I could get it to turn over and it did turn over but would not start, even after i sprayed starter fluid down the throttle body.
I unhooked the battery for a sec.to clean the terminals, now the theft light just stays on,not flashing just solid.
the car is a 96 2 dr.base model.2.2 ltr. 5 sp.man. trans.
Any ideas?.....Mark in Kc
so what you're saying is when you turn the key to start the starter will not engage?
check the clutch pedal switch, the lock cylinder, the small terminal on the starter, and if your car has had the recall done, check the relay for it.

OK thanks for the info.I checked the connections you gave me,worked on the clutch switch and I thinkthats what was keeping it from turning over because after disconnecting it and pluging it back in , the car now turns over.
I can hear something run for just a second when I turn the key but still have not gotten it to start YET.
My theftlght is still solid on the dash but it is getting late and will have to resume tomorrow.......Mark in KC
oh yes,I can smell gas when I turn the key...Mark in KC
How much fuel pressure you getting? I've heard of this (though usually on a 2.4) doing something similar and it being a bad FPR.
i find it amusing that SHOoff has nothing better to do but follow me around & be an unhelpful dick in even cross-forum. - Jon Mick
I"m going with fuel pump or fuel filter. Also check and see if you have spark.
Your car may do 13 sec @ 103 mph, but my car does 146db @ 35 hz.
Yes I have spark.I also sprayed starting fluid down the throttle body but still no start...Yet..........Mark
i had the same issue, it was the fuel pump for me...it's not cheap!

25 bucks shipped on ebay for just the pump and a few hours of your time with no lift.

really??? my 2002 Z24 req'd the garage to drop my tank..cost me almost $500!!
After further review,it seems that it was the ignition switch that would not let the car turn over.I replaced with one off a 97 2.2 manual trans, and the car does turn over but still no start and the theft light ,while not blinking ,is still on..I have spark and air but still no start.
I took spark plugs out to check them and only one was wet...Mark in Kc
I finnaly took it to a shop and they got it running, but said it is very hard to start. They're still working on it ....
Ok was notified by the shop that the computer is cutting in and out while trying to start it,and that they think that is the problem.
I will let you all know how it turns out .They also said that the computer has to be flashed for this particular car.Is this right?...Mark
OK just got back from the shop. The computer that was installed did not solve the problem but they said that they were able to determine that 3 of the injectors were not working on start up.They did not charge me for the computer, just took it back.
So now ,should I just replace the injectors? How hard is that?I have another head for this engine with manifold ,fuel rail etc. complete.
Been sitting for 2 yrsin my garage.Should I just use the rail off that?....Mark
Or just change the injectors indivually? What is that like?...Mark
