Hey, had a question for ya guys. I have a 3in system (please don't say the word backpressure...) and plan on doing the 60deg swap...or90deg swap depending on what I find in the upull yard on monday. Does the flange on the exhaust headers sit at the same level as any other engine? I guess i'm just making sure that I need a downpipe with the same bends for a j-body, but with the flange for for 3.1/3.4 or 3.8sc. I assume there is enough room to fit a large downpipe?
Thanks guys.
Hey SHOoff, I read you're running megasquirt. howd ya go about running the gauges?
Gauges run off of the factory computer. Use an extra TPS connector and the Coolant sensor for a 93 cav with a 2.2 engine. This way you can connect the coolant sensor to both computers. One for the MS unit, and one for your factory... and therefore your gauge. Still haven't gotten the tach to work. I'm in the process of re-wiring and would like to solve that issue, at least somewhat.
As for the exhaust. I don't know what the other guys have done. But I kind of got somewhere to build me an "off road racing" exhaust, whereas it's 2.5" from the manifold all the way back. Though, I broke it and the car kinda sounds like ass. I'd think there should be enough room to get a 3" in there if you wanted to. Over the rear axle would be the hardest part.

on a 3400 u can use a n body down pipe im told. and i know milzymotorsports sells a 2.5 one but its pricy.
Yeah Mike sells GA downpipes for 250. I used an Alero downpipe on mine... I'm currently working with Mike at Milzy and we're going to make engine swap kits for 3800 and 3x00 engines for 3rd gens. To start there will be 3800 custom mounts, custom subframe, and bolt on downpipes which will be direct fit to j exhaust systems. For 3x00 engines there will be the same, mounts, exhaust, and plug and play wiring harnesses with all the instrument cluster confusion worked out.

so do you know if the only difference from a jbody downpipe on a stock engine to 3x00 is the downpipe proximal flange? (the downpipe flange at the manifold, not the one past the cat)
Yeah the flanges are different then the 4cyls. If you swap a 3x00 then you're downpipe needs to be swapped as well.

My exhaust, which I have yet to put full pics of on here, is 2.5 from the manifold back over the rear axle. Going from a 4 cylinder to a 6, the exaust from the 4 cylinder runs under the power steering rack, the the J-Body frames are "equipped" to handle the 6 cylinder exhausts. The V6 will run OVER the power steering rack, in the space provided from GM for the unibodie Js.

^^^ That's cuz the 2.4's exhaust runs in the same location. One thing GM did right by making all the cars the same to save on costs.

i used the stock 3800 downpipe it had the same bend as the 2.4 then i built my exhaust to bend as a j body would normally. i would definatly wait on hooking that up until your almost done. i would put the motor in then the down pipe goes on then connect the exhaust i wouldn't connect the down pipe before its bolted on or you may have a dink of a time bolting it on if it doesn't line up just right

I had a 12" pipe coming off my manifold at first. Just enough to get heat away from the engine and out under the car. Also took a 20 minute drive to the muffler shop like that after I had everything going. Loudest ride ever.

Just out of curiosity, has anybody tried running dual exhaust from the manifolds/headers? Just wondering if you could actually fit this, and what size piping you guys would reccomend. I know obviously the pipes would have to be completely custom welded, but this is just an idea I had to be different and I wonder if its possible. I'm not sure if I want to try this because it would mean doubling up on exhaust parts, but I don't think this has been done before so it would be neat to be the first cavalier with true dual exhaust.
There is a guy on 60degreev6 that has true dual exhaust and a decent sized cam. Guess it sounds pretty awesome having true duals.
The cheapest way to get true duals would be to use the 3500 manifolds.

When I did my swap the 94-95 ga downpipe wouldn't fit.
I cut the flange off and welded flex pipe to it. Still doesn't fit right but I got one bolt in. lol

I'll look into the 3500 manifolds, but what about the actual fitment into a cavalier? How hard would it be to fit the exhaust, and what size piping should I be using? I assume because the exhaust is not all going into one pipe, the pipes could be significantly smaller, but I'm not sure about this.
I was thinking the same thing. Would you be able to get away with dual 1.25" pipes?

I have 2.5 all the way over the axle. It was a tight squeeze over the axle with 2.5.

Dave has headers on a 3500 in a 2nd gen J-body, so his true duals are kinda custom. Dunno how the 3500 manifolds will fit in a 3rd gen, may actually get into the radiator fan.

+1, mine's tight over the axle too. Try not to let anyone ride in the back.

...seriously? I have a 3inch stainless system waiting to be installed when I do the swap, hence the post. Had it made by a shop who said it would fit no problem...
wen i first mounted my 3500 i had the 3500 manis and the flange just cleared the stock fan. i ended up running 3400 manis because of less fab. if any1 were to try it britishcarconversions.com sells the flanges that will bolt to a 3500 mani.
i have 3 inch on my car right now it fits just fine
