a friend of mine gave me his 2003 3100 v6 automatic malibu so i'm thinking of putting the drive train in my 2000 sunfire
Read the v6 swap sticky in the 3rd gen forum
then look at the 3400 mounting question topic in the same forum
most of your questions will be answered there
3100 and 3400 are basically the same just with diferent cubic inches
so to answer your question
Im sure someone has done a 3100 swap but 3400'she's are a little more common

Thanks I wasnt sure if it was the same
Not only are they basically the same, but on the 2000+ engines, the power is almost the same. The 2000+ 3100 is a very capable engine. I believe your mount is the same as the 3400, too. I think the Malibu is the only car to use that style mount on the 3100. All the others mount from the bottom and use the twin dogbones to the upper radiator support.
