So I did the vin number thing online and it says that the engine is 2.2L L4 OHV 8V i was trying to figure out if that means its the eco tec one, one thing i found on google said it was but not really that much info, anyone know?
No, the LN2 and 2200 SFI are the only ohv motors, the Ecotec is a dohc. What year is the car? 95-97 was LN2, 98-02 was the 2200 (the Eco was available as an option in '02, in the Ls Sport I believe), and from 03-05 the Ecotec was the only motor offered.
Its a 2002, i did more research and said it is SFI, so its not an ecotec? damn, i was hoping it was
Whats the difference between SFI and MFI? which is better?
i just found somthing, on wiki it says

"
This is saying that the MPFI is the normal and the SFI is the ecotec, so does this mean i could have the ecotec?
it would say "ecotec" on the engine cover if it was that motor.
im pretty sure its the normal 2.2
you dont even need to vin decode.. just look at the valve cover lol
there was nothing on the valve cover. this is the first 4 cylinder anyone in my familys ownd so sorry for the noobish ways
It says 2200 on the big plastic thing above the valve cover lol you could swap to an ecotec...
MPFI stands for Multi Port Fuel Injection, SFI is Sequential Fuel Injection. SFI is basically just a newer version of mpfi, as it no longer uses batch firing for the injectors.
LN2/2200.... The Eco has 16 valves, 4 per cylinder... the LN2 has 2 per cylinder. Also the Eco valve cover would have space for two camshafts (hence DOHC - dual over head cam)... the LN2 has only one cam, and it's in the block (hence OHV - over head valves), therefore the head is relatively small.
i see! thanks, i really like that diagram helped alottt!!
the eco is all aluminum and was in the saturns and the aleros etc we have a little saturn daily driver we got for cheap and replaced the dead ecotec in
they are really odd unique they remind me of the quad fours in how the water pump is chain driven etc
but they need ot be cared for a bit better than most other engines or failure will occur, alot easier with these than their conventional and more forgiving cast iron block engine counter parts
all engines today are OHV i dont know why they even use that term, it does no good in helping to identify an engine today.
sequential vs> batch fire is the difference in fuel injection systems?types nowadays

Valves are still overhead..... Just cuz the cylinders lay out sideways doesn't change anything. The Honda GCV160 on my lawn mower is OHV, even though the head is at the side.
i find it amusing that SHOoff has nothing better to do but follow me around & be an unhelpful dick in even cross-forum. - Jon Mick
