03 ecotec into a 2000 2.4?
Monday, July 02, 2012 7:31 PM
I can get a 2000 Sunfire GT 2.4(blown engine-good body) for $500 and a 2003 Sunfire 2.2l(good engine-but rolled over) with less than 60k for $500. Is it worth the money and could i switch engines without a lot of headach? Any help would be appreciated-Thanks

you will need entire donor car

all harnesses, the computer, the matching transmission from the 03

exhaust

and so on

virtually everything is different between the two cars and will need swapped

its something i would never even consider attempting and i own and help run a fully equipped 15 year old shop with lifts and overhead engine crane and everything

good luck have fun im glad its you not me!

pfft everything you need is engine forward

all you need exhaust wise is to attach the eco down pipe either way you do it your welding exhaust unless you remove the rear trailing arms but much more work thats not needed

Incorrect...

OP...do it. All you need to swap in is the Eco motor, engine harness and pcm, and trans.

Easy swap in the 2k -up cars

Obviously you don't own a shop or you would never make a comment like this. Ignorance at it's finest. I've seen these swaps done in a backyard pulling the engine by using a tree branch and come along. Given the fact he has both cars he is good to go!

OP . . . You can dooooo it!

Whats up people?

Yea, 2000+ eco swaps only take a day with experienced hands.

I would take into consideration that the 03 was rolled... it may still run fine, but in the future it may go bad from sucking air while upside down if it wasnt shut off right away. Just a thought. This also is assuming your just straight dropping it in.

I have a similar situation and just wanted to seek some confirmation. I have a '98 Cavalier with a SOHC 2.2 that the engine is basically done for. I recently got a hold of an '03 Sunfire with an DOHC ecotec 2.2. I was wondering if this is a reasonable swap out and what should I expect to have to change around....wiring harness, transmission, computer, etc, etc?

Pre-2000 J-body cars used UART for communication... so if you want to swap a 2000-05 engine in.. you need to swap a lot of stuff. I've done the Eco swap into a 98 Cavalier... and I had to swap the entire car wiring harness, custom make the headlight harness, swap over the fuel level sensor (it's different from 95-98 to 99-05), modify the EVAP and vent hoses, etc.. it's a bit of work. Much easier to put an Eco into a 2000-02 car as much is already similar.

You're basically gonna gut both cars, and swap in what you take out of the other car. Much easier to do if you have both cars there...

no SOHC ever avail in third gens, the 2.2/2200/LN2 is an in block cam push rod motor, same engine basicaly was used from 92?-02 only minor changes and its predecessor the 2.0 was basicaly the same as well, mostly the changes it encoured were in the fuel delivery system

660* FTW!

ty for the input on my question, it didn't work out anyways. I figured it would have been a tough change over, and glad I didn't push forward before it became too much of a hassle.
