First off. The 2.4 blew up that's why we replaced it.
And we used a 2200sfi because it was free and we had everything to swap it .
Anyways, the computer is giving me grief. I put the 98 sunfire computer in, tried the relearn process multiple times but couldn't get past the security. So I put the original computer into the car and Fired it up and started right up. Now I have my doubts that this computer will work with this motor so I'm wondering if I have to get a computer from a 2000+ cavy with a 2200 in it in order for it to work.
Second off. There's a red light that looks like the overheating symbol and the red gas pump light is on. Never ever seen this on this car before so what is it? My owners manual doesn't even have it listed.
Thanks for your help.
The car needs a 00 and up computer from what i have seen. I assume the transmission was changed as well since it is a different bolt pattern. If it is running with the original computer and the actual gauges work, I would not bother.
Yes, basically everything was swapped from the front windshield forward.
.okay so im still finishing up the odds and ends.
i fixed an oil leak, the oil filter gasket dried out. lol rough
i was double checking the wiring and i have 33 wires entering the cabin on the sunfire engine harness, but 34 wires on the cavalier engine harness. i traced back the white wire ( extra 1) to pin 58 on the pcm ( computer ) but my sunfire already has this exact pin taken ( this is on the group with black connectors going into the pcm ( computer)
so, does anybody have reliable drawings for a 1998 sunfire and 2001 cavalier that are either viewer friendly or printer friendly?
also the gas gauge doesnt work, goes directly to empty even though theres about 25 litres of gas in there. im assuming its the extra wire but not sure.
You can;t use the 98 computer just can't go get a 00+ and a harness for an 00 and its drop in. you can make your harness work but judging by the how reliable the drawing comments and the 33 and 34 wire comment wiring is not your forte
the electronics are too different on the 00+ cars
JBO since July 30, 2001
Body harness changed a few pins between 99 and 00. You'll need to re-wire the whole car to make the 98 computer work with the 00 wiring... including getting rid of the BCM, swapping to the older EBCM module for the ABS.. etc.. changing the fuel level sensor, swapping the dash plastic to support the larger older cluster, etc.
You're better off to swap to a 2001 2.2L wiring harness.. crossing the 99/00 boundary (either way) gets difficult. The 2.2L LN2 was the same engine 98-02, so no reason you shouldn't be able to find a ton of them in wrecking yards.. just look for one with the same options.
im starting to see more problems now, like fuel gauge starts full, then creeps to empty, no plug for the abs etc.
and the pin outs are completely different on the wiring harnesses with closer look.
looks like i need another cheap parts car
or swap the interior harness to make the 98 work ( i have a 96 sunfirefor scrap anyways)
and about the wiring comments, thats why i wanted some prints to see exactly what i would be getting into.i was able to de pin the extra wire out of the old harness but was stumped to find the other end of the sunfire harness already having that pin full.
ive swapped a 89( i think or 91) grand am before from the 2.4 to a 3.1 v6 and had to absolutely re pin the entire harness. as long as weld new mounts in, cut and angle the exhaust, re route just about every line on it, yeah alot of fun. i was able to get wiring drawings for it at the time, but i dont have the access for them any more.
thanks for the replys also, forgot to type that in above. every little thing helps( especialily where the edit button is!)
and the gas gauge i just remembered runs off resistance for 2000+ and the 98 runs off power and ground setup.
