My 1999 Cavalier with the 3 speed and LN2 motor is a strange beast with its cross between 95-98 and some of 2000-2005 traits.
I have found in the last 6 months of owning it that there are a fair amount of "99 only" parts for it such as the instrument cluster and the fuel sender.
Has anyone ever "downgraded" to a previous model year?
I am considering what I would have to swap as far as harnesses, parts, and ECM/PCM parts to pull this off.
I would like to convert it to a 1998 (first half of year with analog Odometer)
Any ideas on how easy this would be?
There are plenty of junkyard specials in my area to pull from.
thanks!
You just need the fuel sender, ECM, and cluster. I don't believe there is anything different on the wiring at all, but someone who knows the engines better can confirm.
Thanks Mr. Quick,
I think I will give it a go when the warm weather arrives to stay for awhile. Didn't the evap canister move to the back in 99 as well? The shakiest part may just may be the sender and fuel pump and how it would hook up with the newer evap.
Lots of cavs in junkyard but it is tough to get at their undersides for a good look!
In the meantime, my 95 untracked dash is in complete with my reinforcing mods and neoprene washers. My 99 cav is now silent to the point where it is unnatural sounding!
The evap canister is in the back on all of them.
I had an early 98, the charcoal canister was in the front R fender well, next to the PCM.
The big change is the fuel sender.. in pre-99 is was the old GM 0-90 ohms scale, then in 99+ it changed to the newer 250 ohms full, 40 ohms empty scale (I think that's it on the numbers... I'm a little fuzzy on details this time of night). If you do as I did... convert a 98 Z24 to an Ecotec.. then you have to swap the fuel level sender, or the gauge runs backwards.

My bad. When he said "evap canister", for some reason my mind went to the AC line dryer canister.
You're right, the evap canister is in the passenger fender, next to the ECM. Where did it get relocated to? I actually hadn't noticed this on later J-bodies.
99+ it's in the back, right next to the beam axle.

Now that you say that, I remember seeing it on many cars, including my 01.
