03 j body made in 8/2
Friday, September 09, 2016 9:48 PM
Hello all I have made an attempt to reach out to y'all for help on an issue I am having. I own an 03 jbody cavy made in 8/2, I have purchased an aftermarket steering wheel for it and I can't seem to get a straight answer on what adapter I need to install it.. I don't need all this quick release brand name crap. I have found an adapter on Amazon that fits a 94 cavalier steering column.. I had seen a thread on here about someone installing an 94 cavy steering wheel in there 02 cavalier without any adapter or modifications. I was told from yet another thread that the 03 jbody cavys made in 03 have a smaller shaft than the 03 j body cavys made in 02. Now my theory is.. since my 03 cavy was made in 02 it should have the same steering column as an 02 and if a 94 cavy wheel fits on an 02 than the aftermarket steering adapter for the 94 should fit my 03 made in 02.... Is this correct thinking?
Please help, i have been digging and digging on these forums and I can't find anything what so ever to help me! I made a post in newbie section.. no replys. I don't have alot of cash atm so I would prefer buying the 94 adapter for $50 over spending 100 on one for the newer models.. if a 94 wheel fits on an 02 and my shaft is the same as the 02 , than the adapter should fit right?

It is my understanding all 03-05 have the smaller shaft.

simplest way to solve would be to post up a pic of your stock wheel. If it looks like they standard 03-05 wheel then most likely you have the 03-05 splines.

That's the wheel.. I had ordered the 94 adapter.. I pray to God it fits.. if not can't I just go to junk yard and stand the spline from a dead 90's cavy?

I meant yank it from an old cavy, I never would have pegged this to be such a difficult process.. there should be no reason it needs to cost this amount of money to change a freaking steering wheel .. I was under the same impression (all 03 's had smaller spline) but there is another thread that states the guy had an 03 made in 02 ( like mine) and he didnt have the smaller spline..

here is the thread that explains 03's made in 02 have 02 and earlier spline

Sorry I have a hard time believing GM made to to sized spline wheels of the same design, but anything is possible.

people have went and swapped a column from a 96-02 into the 03-05. I also remember a post that shows the adapter needed for a 03-05 as well.

Well at the end of the day .. I shouldn't need to spend $100 on an adapter.. SOMEWHERE there has to be a cheaper one..

But hey . I guess I'll find out when my 94 adapter gets here.. if it dont fit then everyone else will have an answer (if they ever end up asking this question) what part do you pull from the car to make the adapter fit? What's the spline actually called? I cant seem to find its real name anywhere

Just yank the whole steering column from the wrecker. Undo all the plastic and wiring, then there is like three or four bolts holding it on. Pretty simple.

$100 is cheap for a adapter.

Yes Ik $100 is cheap compared to most prices .. but I paid $40 for my 94 adapter that has a small chance of working without replacing steering column .. but it's sad that I can get the 94 adapter , yank steering column from 94 (or so) cavalier for cheaper than an adapter for an 03.. lol I mean I get what you are saying and I don't wanna come off dickish . I really appreciate all the comments and replys on this thread from everyone! I have a tendency to make a simple job way more complicated in my head.. I just hope I can find the proper parts needed at salvage yard if adapter don't work . As much as I hate to say it I do feel like there will be alot of dead cavys there though lol the wheel and adapter is actually a gift from my fiance so I was trying to keep it cheap .. if I have to yank steering column from dead cavy I'll have to keep it to myself or she will feel bad and get mad that I didn't have her order the proper more expensive one.

94 column wont work. It would have to be a 96-02.

Sorry way to much work.Grant and another company supposedly make a adapter for the 03-05.

Aren't grants 3 hole adapters?
And wierd.. 94 wheel fits on 02 . shaft must be same size but column is different .. alright .. (let me guess Prolly has to do with power steering not being in a 94?) Well my stuff should be here tomorrow ultimate test! Fingers crossed

I have looked for other adapters and it seems like it's always a gamble if the adapter will fit or not.. I have yet to see one for _80-100 that specifically states it will fit an 03 cavy .. just says fits 03 Chevrolet car models

Alright . So it arrived. And it dont fit.. it appears the diameter of the adapter is to big .. (obviously) ... So I'll be ordering an NRG one .
I found this one on Amazon (same part number as that thread I linked that states it will work ). were 94 cavalier steering wheel splines bigger than 96-02? In the description of the product it states it will fit 03 cavalier.
