Ignition Wire
Wednesday, June 29, 2005 12:57 PM
I have a 2003 Sunfire and I installed an aftermarket head unit in my car. I took the factory unit completely out. My radio can be turned on even if the car is off. My question is where is the ignition wire that went into the factory head unit? If there is not one, what wire do I have to splice and where is it?

well you can find one under the dash in the thick clump of wires next to the clutch pedal its the thick brown one

I figured id add to this instead of making a new one... ive got a 98 cav, and im wondering which one of the wires going into the stock radio wiring harness is the ignition wire

On your 98 it is the yellow wire in the harness.

On an 03, there isn't one. Tap into the window wiper fuse.

i beleive your 03 is like my 04 and u need a chime module to retain your chime like when u leave keys in or headlights on. I think these fix the power issue also or you can hack into the wiper fuse, wich is a bad option. I bought my chime module from walmart and it works great.

Why is it a "bad" option?

because u loose all you warnig chime function and the your adding on another accsesory to something that is not made for it. If they wanted you do do that they would increase the wire size and fuse size for the wiper circuit to allow for add ons. This is how people catch their cars on fire by adding stuff on where it is not made or desined for.

If you tapped into the fuse on the non-fused side then yes that's a possibility. Although lets be serious here, I'm not saying to hook up an air compressor to the circuit, I'm talking about a transistorized turn-on circuit that draws sub milliamp current.

If you tap on the fused side of the wiper circuit, then it's a non issue and completely safe.

Warning chime is a preference. If you want to pay $50 to $200 to keep your dingler, then by all means go for it.

80% failure rate.

Seriously.

Wal-mart has discontinued it and are liquidating their stock on it.

I'm with Brad on this one. The chime module is flaky at best. The ignition wire is just a relay wire meant to tell the deck if the car is turned on or in accessory. I myself pulled the wire from the center console and tapped into the window wiring. If your to dumb to remember your lights are on you shouldn't drive.

Whats up people?

I turned my lights on, I opened my door.... My car doesn't need to tell me these things with an annoying sound lol.

What did everyone do before this feature was ever installed? We made sure our lights were off, that's what we did!
