Ok I went and did the big 3 yesterday and ended up with a problem with the power lead. when I hooked it up and fired the car up it was fine at idle. but when I rev it my odometer gauge cluster and my hvac panel lights all flicker. The voltage is staying between 14.3-14.4 at idle and raised above idle. The car seems to run fine. I was just hoping someone could pinpoint it for me. I have 4 gauge wire ran. 1 off the alt to chassis neg terminal to chassis and constant from alt + to battery + terminal. I also left all the factory wires on.

I also noticed that there is headlight and voltage jumps costantly from 14.3-13.8 constantly it just flickers. you can even hear the motor surging to I guess thats what you would call it. it does it off idle all the way to 4000 RPM atleast thats to the rev limiter.

weird...go back and check all your connections is all i can say

been there done that I took it off and it was fine. seemed to only be the power from the alt to battery. I ran a 8 gauge wire from the bat to the fuse box under the hood as well just to give a lil more current there as well

take that wire off your fusebox..that's not doing anything for your stereo.
take pics of the if you can...if it stops when you take it off, then something is amiss.

I know it's not helping the stereo. I just wanted to help get some more power flow to the vitals. I ran my constant off the alt and ran it right with the factory harness up and around the valve cover and over. it was wire loomed at all.I have no clue what the issue is. I plan on running a Directed 2400D off the car so I wanna get the upgrade to work.

so the wire runs directly from the battery to the bolt on the back of the alt correct? it's not running through the fusebox or anything else funky like that? you got a fuse in it?

uh oh what? I've read that it's fine to run it without a fuse. I was gonna fuse it later on just not right now. but can anyone suggest anything?

uh oh!
why uh oh! I have ran my big three with no fuse between battery and alt. for over a year with no problems at all. I'd suggest making sure you didn't knock any connectors loose and make sure it is connected to the proper location on the alt.wysiwyg has an excellent step by step in the faq.
It's not safe to run it without a fuse.

I don't really see how it isnt safe without a fuse. I have never had an issue with it at all.
^Because your battery could explode, or if the terminal for some reason came off, you could seriously screw up ur alternator and whatever else the power wire touches. It just isn’t safe. As mentioned in a couple other forums, you want to fuse the wire with a fuse that is equivalent to what the wire can carry.

the factory wire is fused...so you should fuse the new wire as well.
any wire coming off the battery without a fuse is a hazard.

It was just temporary until I got the fuse and what not for it. Could it be picking up the pulses off the fuel injectors? I have the wire ran right next to the fuel rail and all.

doubtfull
something is amiss if the problem stops when you take the wire off. But you can try routing it another way and see if anything happens.
Can you take pictures of your wires? connections and all?

when I get a shot I'll put it back on and show how it was hooked up. I have something to do tomorrow.

that's a head scratcher man...if you just added the wires and didn't do anything with the stock ones, i dunno what could be causing it.

hmm..hard to tell by the pic where it's running to.
it should be attached to the mounting bracket bolt.

The ground on the alternator is attached to the mounting screw and bracket right there on the alternator.
2009 Ford Mustang V6
Which mounting screw? The one on the alternator with the nut on it?
