Hey the guy at Best Buy said that to put a radio in my friends 05 Monte Carlo you need that $150 brain thing for the airbag. You guys said it only affects the door chime, does anyone have proof of this and does it apply for all 2000+ Gm models?
as far as i know, and im almost def positive on this
removing the radio in any car WILL NOT set off the airbag, its just a b.s scheme they use to charge people more money
Yeah thats what it sounds like. That didnt make any sense to me eitheir. Why would the airbag even be on the same circuit as the radio.
I'm not sure where people get that it has something to do with the air bag. The packaging for the unit only says that it creates a switched power source, keeps the Retained Accessory Power, and keeps the door chime. It says nothing about air bags. If your friend has Onstar and wants to keep it, he will need the module though. Go to Circuit City and ask for a 80-2003 harness adaptor. It's the same plug at the RC01, but no module and it has the accessory power wire already extended. I'm not sure if BB carries the same harness or what their part number would be for it.

Bestbuy usually has the right harnesses. They once refused to sell me the harness without the "brain" thing for my friends grand am, they said they didn't want to be liable for any problems. I've also had this happen with many of my other friends gm cars. I've probably installed a dozen different systems without the "brain" and nothing has ever happened, just no chimes. Just tell the people you don't care what they have to say, you just want the harness without the brain. That's what I always have to do.
i have put many cd players into 2000+ gm vehicles professionally and we never used the $150 harness, nor did i ever have an airbag hit me or anyone else in the face. all you need it the metra 70-2003 (i believe) harness and you will will have to run the red 12v+ accessory wire from your radio to a switched positive 12v source so you will be able to turn the radio off when the car is shut off. you will lose your door chime feature though and the only way to retain that feature is to buy the $150 harness.
Ok thanks guys. Yeah the guy at beast buy was going on and just exaggerating bout how my friend would have to spend $4000 getting his airbags reset. If he didnt buy this brain thing. He was saying stuff like it has to be professionally installed. He kept at it untill we left the department.

That's what I ALWAYS run into. I usually go to circuit city now, or professional shops.
Yeah I saw on there web site that you can actually call them and theyll help you. Thats pretty cool.
