Hey im doin a complete system install in my 03' fire... read some stuff saying that the entire dash must come off to just install an aftermarket deck? I think this is BS but just wanna get some information first. Also, the guys at futureshop wouldnt sell me the mounting harness alone because of some stupid class 2 wiring GM has on these newer J's etc. So someone who has done an install on a 03 + J please tell me what i need to do! Thanks.
I'm not completely sure on the sunfire, but the cavalier has to remove the top dash pad and front bezel.
I didn't have to remove my dash on my 01 fire. I just bought a regular 12 dollar wiring harness, but I lost all of my door chimes.
Yea i heard that i will lose the chimes which is fine cause there annoying as hell anyways. But i read some thing about the airbags or something? not sure what it was exactly. And wouldnt the cav be the same as the fire for the same model year?
tell them you need a 70-2003 harness and a MET-992003 kit and you'll be set.
don't tell them what kind of car it is for, not their business.

yeah if you tell them what car its for they'll start bsin about how u need to buy something or something wont work...but now about your air bags...ive heard some people say that they will go off others say this is bs...i believe its bs ive never had anything happen to me ... then again i got an older one so it might be diff on the 03+ or something, not really 100% sure, but people have said that they dont go off, but if you're worried, just disconnect the battery and wait a couple mins before you do anything and ull be set

you want to bump, then they will bump and hit real hard and a lot good.
LOL
^^^Listen to him. They try to rape you with stuff like this. I was installing an aftermarket CD player in a 91 cavy and asked the guy for a wiring harness, and he spouted off something about needing a 91 dollar harness to keep the stock radio in the car, he said it had something to do with the computer in the car and wouldn't work without the stock radio!
LMAO!
So I said screw it, went and got one that looked like it fit, threw the thing in there and it works perfectly. :-)
Yea ive heard all of this.. im just gonna go to a place in london called the power station, they said theyd hook me up. Tired of hearin the BS about @!#$ going wrong from futureshop and trying to sell me a 70 dollar harness so i can have my stock stero in the trunk! WHY!?! But i still am skeptical whether i have to remove the dash on my 03 to wire this all up?
when i bought my 2001 cavy there already was an aftermarket deck in it with that crappy wiring harness and stock deck in trunk, now i have an aftermarket steering wheel and no airbags can i now rip out that stock deck and huge wire harness if its not needed?

Honestly, you never needed it in the first place.
i bought the car with it i didnt add it, lol so i can remove it with no problems to anything else
anyone had a problem of the dash pad getting stuck on the air bag or around the air bag area....?
chris stubbens- Yes you do need to remove the top dash pad and bezel to install an aftermarket deck. No you dont need a t harness or any other module unless u want the chimes. No the airbags will not go off. You do however need to run an accessory wire for the deck because the wiring harness will not have one.
Thanks, where do i get this accessory wire?
when did they change the sunfire dash so that you had to remove the top pad? 95-02's its just removing two screws in the glove compartment, i know the top pad changed in 03, but i didn't think it was a full re-design
Cavalier, you have to remove the top pad and the dash bezel.
Sunfire, you remove two 7mm screws to remove the front trim piece. No need to remove the top pad.
...j
woops i read wrong i thought he had a cavalier
Thanks.. well that makes the job a little easier then! Looking forward to getting this installed on saturday. So just to clear things up.. im gonna need that cheap harness (not worried about the chimes) and an accesory wire?
Oh does the acc wire have to be fused in with a 12V? Or can i put it in with a 9V?
for the accessory wire:
either tap into the thick brown wire..its above the hood release on the drivers kick panel in that thick loom.
OR
use a fuse tap, all auto parts stores sell it, and tap into the wiper fuse.
for the wiring harness:
use the harness for a chevy tracker. same thing. its what i used, and i wrote a guide 2 years ago using that harness just fine. do yourself a favor when you have your radio out and cut out the plastic in the back of the area where the radio is. its much easier to stuff all that wire in there that way.
its all 7mm bolts as far as i know, even with the sunfires. i know my cav is for sure, ive taken the dash apart over 20 times
if you ahve any questions, feel free to contact me, ive installed in about 5 j cars already. the only person on this board that for sure knows more than me is john lenko...i bow to him...john is my god.
