I have a few questions. It's been a while since I fabricated anything for a stereo and I'm just looking for some other opinions.
First, what's the best way to go about putting 6.5" in the door locations? I thought about just opening the area up but I'm worried about depth and thought a spacer would be good, but then there's hiding it behind the door panel.
Second, I want to fiberglass the spare tire well to mount my 15" sub. It's a Polk MOMO. Do you think there be enough room if I port the enclosure? It's in a huge MTX Sledgehammer box right now and it takes up a ton of room and it's fricken heavy.
Nice. They did a good job with that. I've seen a lot of them at different sound offs and I've done it for other cars, but we always built up the height a little bit so we had plenty of depth. I want to keep it low-profile, light as possible. The box I have now is way too heavy and it won't clear the rear strut tower brace. Not to mention road trips suck with no trunk space. I got enough right now for my pool cue, amp, and my backpack and that's about it.

with 3/4 inch wood and infinity reference 6.5" speakers, i have no clearance issues with the window inside the door or the door panel hitting the front of the speaker.

if you need a template i can help you with that, bought some crappy plastic adapters off ebay and they cracked, so i made my own from their design outta MDF, works like a charm so, if you want i can trace it out and send it to you.
Thanks, guys. I can make the templates once I see what shape I need, not a big deal. I just didn't know how thick of a spacer I could use. I still hadn't pulled the door panels off to look behind yet so I wanted to know what to expect. Not a big fan of surprises. And my 4x6s are S H O T. I'm pretty sure they're the stock speakers so they gotta go.
when you make the template, just use the mounting bracket for the 4x6 and trace it out. then put the 6.5 in the center of the trace and draw on the half circles you need. worked good for me.
only took me like 5 mintues to make the spacers/adapters. after that, its just typical install time. i did mine up real clean and mounted to crossover inside the little cubby in the door (which i don't like). i think it took me maybe a half hour per door.
now i just need to think of some where else to mount the crossover...

I'll mount the crossovers up under the dash on mine or possibly with the amp rack. The amp rack is going on the underside of the deck lid so it's up out of the way. The capacitor(s) will be on the underside of the rear package tray, where the rear speakers are now. The rear stage will be eliminated to make room for everything and a set of 6.5s will be in the front doors with the tweeters in the A-pillars, and a second set will be in kickpanels. The stock head unit will be left where it is and serve as the source unit, and a 1/2 DIN EQ will be mounted vertical under the armrest. A line driver will clean up the output signal. The basic idea I'm going for is sound quality without a ton of flash and extra weight or taking up a ton of space. Nice and simple.
Maybe you can tell, I've done this before. Just never installed in a 3rd gen Cavalier.
