i have these 2 year old infinity kappa 12" DVC subs...and the output of them just wasnt as good as i expected. im looking to get rid of them...
heres what im looking for.
CRISP, LOUD. i want something thats gonna make vinny paul of pantera's doublebasskick's POUND. i dont listen to rap, at all. should i be looking for titanium cones? smaller woofers, but more of them? im not sure what would sound better for metal. can anyone give me any suggestions? style of woofer, size, etc? i can find specific brand and models myself...just looking for those with much experience's advice. (sndsgood, wsyiwyg, and lenko...you 3 guys are my gods)

well smaller cones such as a 10" will give you better cleaner and crisper beats with little or no distortion. as opposed to 12 or 15 inchers. Then again you get higher freq. with a smaller cone then a larger one.
My 10"ers run at 100hz, which is 100 pulses a second. Thats where i block them off at, and a low of 23 hz. though i can go up to 300hz and a low of 20hz.
what do you have your HU set at? and what freq do you have your amp set at? if they are not the same, your subs wont sound as good as they could.
And are you using a low pass filter or high pass?
you can run 18-250hz if you so choose.
If your willing to sell your subs, whats your asking price?
i paid 350 for them new...plus all the materials for the box...im honestly not sure. i didnt think that far ahead. i wanna have a new set at least picked out before i go selling my old ones.
i dont have an amp anymore, it fried ages ago. im just trying to do new sub research now.

You can get just as crisp of a sound out of a 15, 12, or even an 18, if you have the right enclosure. Don't go with a square woofer, you're definitely going to want some really good sq. Also, go with a sealed enclosure, or a ported box that's tuned to around 33-35 hz. You'll be very impressed with maybe some alpine type r's, lanzar optidrives, etc...
so no square woofers...got it. i was thinkin of goin kicker..thanks for the tip.
i wont buy lanzar anymore after the experiences ive had. alpine type r's are pretty loud for their wattage...
how are the rockford p2's vs the alpine type R/X 's?? should i go for 2/3 10's or 2 12's or 1 15"? im still not sure about size. my logic would say smaller woofer would be crisper...but im not sure if that would be enough of a difference to be noticeable.

Well I'm a little partial because I work at a stereo shop that sells JL audio, but my recommendation would be to buy a 10W7 , and JL makes a box that is specifically made for the 10w7. They hit very hard, and very clean. I think that it would be a great way for you to go. And I think that you would be surprised what you will get out of 1 sub. Here is the jl website for some specs on this sub.

this is one of those cases where you probably need to run down to the local shop and take a listen to a whole bunch of different sizes/brands. Go somewhere that has better quality products than best buy and circuit city, but you can check them out too. Listen to some boston acoustics subs. I have always thought they sound great with non-rap type music. Check out eclipse too. And run down to whoever sells infinity around you and listen to the kappa perfects. I say pretty much stay away from fifteens unless you are running some hefty midbass's up front though. 10's would be well suited to your application if in the right enclosure.
sound like you need to run down to avenue sound.
there are SO many subs out there you can use...it's not even funny
where do you plan on purchasing it from? and what all brands do they carry there? what kind of price range you looking at? how much power you wanna run?

How much space do you want to take up?
Mike Roth
i dont care about space. power...well im not talkin RE XXX power..but im not talkin best buy power either. id say the higher end of the midddle class spectrum of woofers...at least 500w rms in 2ohm..pref. more.
im not looking for specific brand reccomendation, im looking for a place to start.
10" 12" 15" sound better for metal?
aluminum/titaium cones better for metal than standard level stuff?
those are the major questions that i have at the moment. i know i gotta go to (avenue sound..yes dave i know) a car audio shop and listen to a bunch...but thats not in a car..and i dont trust sound rooms, ive been fooled by them before. was more looking for metalheads that have subwoofers...
but thanks to those that have replied. dave, if you want my infinitys...150 bux with the box...and its yours.

mike roth, kart racer? message me back i think i know of you through a friend
Well I think you are right about the 500w rms and I do listen to a lot of metal. Like I said before about the 10w7 JL, it has sounded the best with pantera, meshuggah and cradle for me. I have had 12's and 15's. Some 12's are ok for that, but definately stay away from the 15's. Also stay away from the square subs. As far as cone material, that is all personal preference. Also, when you go to these audio dealerships, 8 out of 10 times the people that work there will have subs in there car. If you really want to here how it would sound, see if anyone there has them in a car or if they can have a customer come in and let you hear theirs. That is the best way to get around the sound room mumbo jumbo
thanks to all those that have helped...i havent fully made my decision yet...but im still designing how i want the trunk to be setup anyway. i got the information i was looking for.

sndsgood < Can you send me some pics of ur car? I would like to see the interior, can really tell from ur sig picture.
I am Metal, metal, and more metal, but be careful what you wish for. I LOVE Lamb of God and when my Sony 12's got stolen and i switched to ALpine E's, I lost alot of the rumbling bass that loud metal does have sometimes(even if its the same kind as rap). The ALpine hit harder than the Sony's though and Primal Concrete Sledge(pantera) rocks like a mother now.I doubt if you bought 10's, installed everything, tested em, and didnt like em, that the place would deny you the chance to spend more money and buy 12's that are more than likely going to be more expensive.
