Random issue with amp turning off
Saturday, March 18, 2006 8:55 PM
I have a Viper D1200.1 and the big 3 done. well I have a issue where it will be playing and all of the sudden shut of then turn back on. I am runnin it @ 1ohm with 2 SWR-1242D alpine type r's. checked power lead and ground. cleaned the ground area down and connected it. It seems to do it at mid to upper volume levels. Remote wire is fine. It's being powered with 4 gauge wire and a 80 amp fuse. No protection light comes on. just kinda clueless as to what it could be.

is the amp warm? not all amps show protection lights for heat. That's what happened to my X-treme 600 watt amps before they died because I didnt bother to check them. Maybe the load is too low for the amp? Just a thought. If it turns off randomly and comes back on, chances are it isnt any fuses or wiring problems. The ground could be the problem but you mentioned you checked it. Check the amp manual if it is one ohm stable, and if it isn't, rewire the subs in parallel and series combination for a 2 or 4 ohm load.

Are you clipping?

no it's not clipping and it's 1 ohm stable and it does it when the amp is cold.

thats very odd... if it works then the ground is fine, if the ground wasnt any good and this was happening all my amps would overheat. (hence why my 800 watt mono died, when I took it out when the motor siezed up, only like 5 strands of the 4 gauge were making contact)

Does yoiur Amp have a fan? How long are you beating your woofers before they shut down? Usually you have about 1 hour of beating in cold weather with the trunk lid closed before stuff starts to get warm! In warm weather, like 60 and above you have about 30 minutes. 90 degrees at about 10 minutes. But we are taking aobut turning the radio up to like 20 or higher depending on your gain!!

the gain is around 1/4 up as is the bass boost. my sub level is at 0 on the head unit. I run the head unit any where from 1/2-3/4 volume. back seat us always down when I drive for ventilation.

he said its still cool when the amp shuts down... This one's really got me confused. I'd say take it to a shop and bench test the amp (or if you have a spare battery/charger, use some short speaker wire and bench test the amp at home... to my knowledge its free either way)

Not much else I can suggest. I dont like implying an amp may be dead, especially if it was a gift, because it makes me feel bad and I feel like it makes the person looks like an ass.

drove it today and the amp was fine so I am gonna check the remote wire. see if it's loose on the back of the head unit.

The other thing that you might want to check with the remote wire, is that it is not crimped or smashed somewhere in the line where it is ran back to the amp. It might have wire showing somewhere in which case it would ground out and not give power to the amp to turn on. Check door jams, under seats, around deck, and under the dash. Those are he big spots

Update
I ran a new remote wire. 12 gauge this time make sure it was a lil bit bigger to ensure it got a good signal. The amp still shuts off. Starting to really piss me off. I think next I'm gonna bump it up to 0/1 Gauge wire just to give it a better signal. Thats the last thing that I can do to it other than have it sent out for repair.

From the sounds of it, it is probably your amp. Most likely the power supply inside of the amp. Sorry to hear that man. Let us know what you find out though

you said it was refurbished? maybe whoever done it, didn't do so great a job. my best advice would to get it re done by someone that has a good reputation for stuff like that.

I wonder why we don't sell those amps anymore, oh that's right, they were junk.

Sorry, but it is more than likely a bad amp.

It's the amp... you could also rewire it to a higher ohm output and crank the amp that way you can see if it's having trouble holding the 1 ohm. other then that I would look at replacement based on all that you have tried so far
