I have noticed in the cobalts, there is a battery in the trunk. I think I may do that with mine, but only use put the battery in for the sound system. What I wanted to ask was, is there anyway to install a on/off switch so when I don't want to use the sub but still listen to the speakers I can. Also how long would an average battery last til I would have to recharge the battery? I am not going to hook up the trunk back with the car's recharging system.
Why? I see no point when you can just run it off the cars battery and not worry about it. Because then if you put it in the back you will have to do so much extra work and money to make it work.
I just figured that cause I have a battery lying around that I would do it. Also then I wouldn't have to put a hole thru my firewall and have to worry about my battery dying. Know of any sites of step by step on how to put in the complete sytsem, amp, wiring in etc?
there used to be a lot of talk about this on www.v6z24.com might wanna check it out, but honestly, is your amp drawing enough power where this is going to help?
Go Premium, it builds character!
there is a hole already in ur firewall with a rubber gromet in it, run the wire through there
and i imagine that the battery without being charged might last 2 hours? maybe?
it seems so pointless to me.. just run both batteries
Yeah that is true I think I am just going to do it like everyone else now. It is hard to do. How long does it take and on what skill level is this project?
still haven't found a good site for this task, if anyone has one could you send it to me
thanks
if you can wire an amp in ur trunk, you can wire a battery, pretty much the exact same thing.
Sub and amp is fairly easy. As for the extra battery. Flark it. To be honest it will not last very long running a sub. They are pretty power hungry and you'll find it dead quite often. As for hooking up an amp, basically it's as follows. Run a power wire from battery to amplifier. Run a ground wire from the amp to a bolt on the body within the trunk. You will have to run a small remote power wire from the head unit to the amplifier. This will turn the amp on and off with the stereo system (Usually the remote power wire is a solid blue wire on the head units harness). Once that is finished run your RCA cable from the head unit to the amplifier. This wire gives you the signal for you sound. Once that is complete hook the sub up to the amplifier with speaker wire of course. That's it in a nut shell. Once trick I'll give you is to run the RCA and power wire on oposite sides of the car (Power on driver side, RCA on passenger side). This will eliminate the majority if interference you may get from the power wire.
If you look under the driver side of the dash board ther will be a large rubber gromet you can run the power wire through. If your still keen on a switch to turn the subs off than just add a switch to the power wire of the amplifier OR even easier, add a switch to the remote power wire that links to the head unit.
Again I'm saying forget about the extra battery because without the charging system it's not gonna last long and it'll end up being more work than it's worth to get it wired and mounted properly.
If you have any other questions feel free to post and I'll check up on the forum later.
except subs dont need the battery to perform the amp does. you are not gonna get alot out of a second battery if it is not connected to the front battery. I had my rear batt come undone and it lasted maybe 20 mins. That was with 4 RF 1000bds though

So that's why my subs don't work....

i just linked the battery in the trunk to the battery in the front. pos to pos, both negs to chasis. worked like a charm and i never get dead batterys. i've left the music on for like3 or 4 hours and car starts on the dime.
If you're going to do an extra battery i'm a big fan of running the car accessories off one and nothing but the starting system off of another one. That way no matter if you kill the battery or not the car always starts. If you do this and kill the battery a lot I would recommend a deep cycle battery. Usually a battery used for fishing boats works well. A normal battery if you kill it a few times it'll kill the battery altogether and it wont last long.
If you do it like you said and you dont run it to the altenator, I give it 3 or 4 maybe 5 times of killing it and charging it and it's toast. It may last longer if you hook a battery charger to it and slow charge it, but even then it wont last long.
As far as an on and off switch you could hook a toggle switch to your power wire for your amp. Any good head unit usually has an option to turn your sub off though. I know my pioneer has an option to have the sub run "normal" "Reverse" and "Off"
^^^ Do you know how impractical that is? How does the second battery get a charge? A seperate alternator? Or do you just deep cycle the battery til it no longer charges and buya new one? There is nothing wrong with having the batteries linked. The only drawback is with a stock alternator it is a bigger load to charge. It Will give you more starting power. Because you arent draining one. You are pulling from both batteries. If you do it . Link the front and rear batts. And I will also recommend to you that you upgrade your alternator and do your big 3 also.
