Need box recommendations for W7 ported..
Wednesday, April 12, 2006 11:41 PM
Well.. around this time I posted about me getting a 12" W7 and 1000/1 and a great deal. I ended up selling for my laptop and cash and while I love the laptop I missed my JL

This year, I have come across the same deal again and I intend to snatch it up

I got rid of the last W7 because my box was built way wrong and it was too small.. It would hit really hard and sound awesome on some songs, others it just seemed to miss the beats completely and when it should hit VERY low.. there was no sound for the woofer.. Something was def. wrong with the enclosure. I could afford to make another box and repair the havoc the 1000/1 did to my electrical system.

So this year I am in better shape financially and I intend to have it done right and get some things worked out with my electrical system, but the question remains about how to build the mystery box. I have a talented friend who does design boxes and works on that kind of thing so he is currently working on something for me but we are debating on box size.

I listen to Rap and Rock.. I want it to beat hard and fast ( love metal ).. but def. hit hard and deep for rock.. Im not sure if the same enclosure can do both, but I want something in that range.

It will be a slot ported box tuned around 30-32 ( think this would work ? ) and he is saying that closer to 3 cubes, I said 2.5, and JL recommends 1.75 ( WAY too small IMO )

Im not concered with dimentions for the box, I am pretty much looking for what size box I should go with and where to tune so it doesnt cut out some notes like my last box

Thanks for listening

i'd suggest giving jl audio a call. most companies have tech support that cant give you the best sized box for what you need. i pretty much call up tech support for every box i build to hear wht the company suggests.

gotta remember that is net after port and driver displacement. 1.75 ft for the woofer. Woofer probbaly displaces about .18 feet and the port is depending on slot or aero port so you are already at about 2.5 feet internal probably.

Well Great Sounds in Muncie can get me the HO box for the W7 for 150..

Its already made for the sub ported and has the black sub with red insert.. so it would look and hopefully sound good

So.. what do you guys think about that box ?

1-954-423-4111, ask for Hector. Have the measurements for how wide or tall you cna go, he will give you the dimensions for the proper box for your sub.

To be honest, I prefer W7's in a sealed enclosure. or a proper 8th Order bandpass...(GOOD LUCK, finding someone who can build an 8th Order...)

call ovation audio down here in castleton (NE side of indy)
they're one of the few places in the area that carry the JL line. i know that they do a lot of custom work for high profile clientel as well as anyone else. give them a call, i'm sure someone there can give you an idea for dimensions.

I would recommend facing the driver rearward. I have my Polk/MOMO 15" in a slot-ported enclosure. Firing directly into the cabin the output was somewhat sloppy, almost like it was canceling out. I faced the driver rearward so it fired into the back of the trunk and that really cleaned up the sound and it hits hard as hell. I'm like you, I listen to both rock, metal, rap. I also listen to house music and blues, sometimes jazz. So I wanted to have an enclosure that would provide the sound I wanted. I found better results with the enclosure tuned to 35Hz, with about 2.25cu/ft (before driver displacement). Granted, that's for a different sub, but it gives you an idea.

its because you didnt seal it off from the trunk. you were getting cancellation

I will either face to the trunk or seal it off to the cabin .. What would be the steps in sealing it off ? Should I do this when I put in the sound deadening ?

I am gonna look into the HO Box on sat. and go hear it at Ovation or Great Sounds. Ovation is where my stuff came from and I buy stuff there alot, but not sinceI got the sub. I wanna go there and next door to skyline chili

I was gonna do about 2.5 cubes at 32 hz or take the HO box and I do listen to ALL types of music and want it to sound good musically.. not concerned with being REALLY loud.. 800-1000w will do that.. I want to hear it how it was supposed to sound and not miss notes and sound good on some songs bad on the others... Definately sound good on Alternative music and rap is mostly what I listen to.. some metal.. Ill give up being REALLY loud for being REALLY accurate

I will prolly give hector a call or talk to ovation about getting some f/g done to the box we build.. I like custom better for the overall theme of the car, but it would be a ton more expensive, but they do good work

the reason I suggested Hector, is that he is a TECH that works for JL AUDIO, that # is JL's Number.

I thought it might have been JLs number.. it was familar

I gave them a call a couple days ago, they have the best customer service I have seen in my life.

When I called they answered very quickly and asked what they could help me with. I told them that I needed a new JL badge for the front of the speaker because it popped off during excursion and I cant find it to put back on. They simply asked my name and address and said they would have a couple of them out to me in a few days.. and that was it.

I figured I would have to explain being out of warrenty it would be an issue, but they helped me right out.

So If I decide to go with a custom box, I will def. give hector a call and hopefully he is as helpful as the woman I spoke with on the phone.
