Best place to splice the Amp power line?

Is it better to split the line closer to the battery, or could I split the line in the trunk. I'm about to install a second amp, and am curious if these splitters are good enough, and if so, it it better to split the supply close to the battery, or closer to the amp.

BTW, can I tap the stereo wiring harness for power and ground for an equalizer, or is it best to run lines to the battery and a chassis ground?

One last question, how are the 6.5 inch brackets that Best Buy has for door speaker conversions?

Thanks for any help.

you could just get a fused terminal block. use the existing power wire running back to your current amp. put the power wire into the terminal block. the terminal block will then split the power into multiple leads, run one to each amp. use the same size wire from the batt to the terminal block and the same to the amps. using small wire is a bad thing (wire AWG size is determined by the amount of current the amps will draw at maximum, which is on here somewhere im sure).

you probably could tap the radio power for the power for your eq, but i would probably run it to the fuse panel. the ground i would just attach seperate from the radio harness to the chasis.

building your own brackets is alot more fun, theres lots of help on here for that, but im sure if you bought the ones from best buy they would do the job.

If both the amps are in the same place (trunk in your case), split closer to the amps. Think about it, if you split at the firewall or wherever up front, you'll just be running two lengths of wire all the way to the back instead of one... waste of wire.

just make sure you put a fuse RIGHT beside the battery, for safety sake.

Thanks for the input. I just picked up a Kenwood amp out of the classifieds on here, and got my EQ in the mail today. Now I just need to find the time to do it. Does anyone have pics of where they have their EQ's mounted. I'm thinking under the steering column. Pics would really help. Thanks

how about under your radio. the opening is DIN and a half(unless your eq is bigger than 1/2 din). how about center console or glove box? Hope this helps, post what you decide(with pic's).

I measured for the pocket under the head unit, and it was too wide. would've been nice though. I'm thinking somewhere with easy accessability. Having all the RCA,s running from the eq, and within reach will make for easy upgrades and expansion since i won't have to pull the whole dash apart every time. I'll post pics when I'm done.

i have mine mounted on the back seat with my amp.

i am using it as a crossover, so i dont really need to adjust anything, except maybe the bass knob if i want more or less bass output. when i get my amp rack done it will be mounted way back in the trunk, so i wont even want to adjust anything then, set it and forget it.

i'll post pics up of the amp rack once it is done.

if your planing on spliting your power wire, i hope that you have at least 4 guage in there. 2 amps will more then likely draw too much current for smaller wire.

I'll double check the gauge, but I'm fairly sure it is 4 guage. When I bought it, the store told me it was wire rated for a 400 watt amp, and even with 2 amps, I'm not pushing that kind of wattage. Maybe at peak, yes, but RMS, one is 100 watts, the other is 120 watts. Another note, Does anybody have 6x9's in the doors? I just came into a pair of Kenwoods, and was thinking about it. Gotta sound better than the 4x6's that are there now. Got pics?

I bought the Rockford Fosgate fuse block to split the power lead. How do I determine what size fuses to put in the block, there's room for 4. Or do I just fuse the power output conncetions from the block that I will be using? Should I just match the fuses in the amp with the ones I need for the block? I really want to do this myself, but i don't want to fawk it up. That's why I'm in this forum asking for your advice. Thanks.

If I've got two amps, a Verge (yes I know it's not the best, but it was free) 80 watt amp with a 30 amp fuse, and a Kenwood 6201 60 x 2 amp with a 25 amp fuse, can I use a 60 watt inline fuse at the battery, and split the power through a distribution block. Also, which amp would you recomend for powering my 6x9 2 way Kickers. They're rated I believe at 180 RMS. The doors have Apine 4x6's rates at 30 RMS. I may replace the doors with some components down the line, but I just spent my mad money on the Kenwood AMP, Kenwood 9 band EQ, and all of the other installation stuff. Oh yeah, everything is wired at 4 ohms. Thanks.
