would it make much difference in db in i face my subs inside the car then the trunk? if so how much?
if you face the sub's into the car and seal off the trunk it will be louder (1-100db's)
also if the amp is set right it will sound better
if your seats flip down, facing them into the car will sound louder, or if its a ported/bandpass, facing the ports into the car will sound louder that way. They get even louder inside the car if the subs are right at the trunk lid (in my experience anyway)
If your seats dont flip down, I find that setting them on the spare tire well facing the trunk lid makes them sound louder. (1/2 way between the seats and the trunk lid)
Every vehicle is different, and every install is different, even in the same model of car.
With my stroker, which is in a big ported box, I found a huge difference between firing the sub forward and backward. Firing it forward (but not sealed off from the trunk) resulted in absolutely no low-end bass, and terrible SPL, regardless of whether or not the seat was folded down. I was shocked by the amount of cancellation I was getting. Just turning it around to fire backward (sub and ports are on the same plane) helped immensely in low-end extension and it was night and day with regards to SPL (probably 10-15db). That's just my case - it's different for everyone else's car.
The thing is, you have to experiment alot to find what works best in your car. Alot of people say to fire toward the rear, which often works pretty well, but you should really do some experimenting to see what works best. You can get huge variations in response and SPL by moving the box to one side, or even closer/further from the back of the car. It really all depends on the individual car and the install.
The two main reasons why people tell you to seal the front baffle off from the rest of the trunk, when firing subs forward are these:
(1) You eliminate any chance of cancellation caused by the trunk itself.
(2) You're pressurizing a much smaller volume, which really helps SPL. With the trunk sealed off, you're only pressurizing the cabin of the car.
The 50-50-90 rule: Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.
i totally agree with everything you said. I think alot of people assume since the subs are firing toward you it will be louder. Unless its sealed up you will lose decibels, but gain upper end extension. but anyhting above 80hz is really directional to me.

anything above that should be a midrange to me.
There have been several tests done and in most if not all trunk vehicles..firing towards the rear yielded the highest spl.
THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO WALLS AND BOXES SEALED OFF FROM THE TRUNK!!
Just from flipping the box around front to back, or facing up.
