Alright, I need some opinions. I'm getting a new sub soon but I can't seem to decide what to choose. It's been so long since I was heavily into car audio and I seem to have lost touch a bit. Anyway, it will be running off an RF Power bd500.1 and going into a 2.7 cubic foot ported enclosure tuned to 44 Hz. I've been considering the following:
- Alpine Type R
- SoundSplinter RL-p15
- Dayton Audio Titanic MKIII
- ED 16Ov.2
I need to stay with a 15" dual 4 sub. Any opinions? Any other suggestions you can make? I'm trying to keep it in the ballpark of $250. Thanks!

Why do you want it tuned so high? Tune it lower if you want any SQ at all. You're not running anywhere near enough power for a competitive SPL setup, anyway.
The Soundsplinter sub is an SQ/SQL sub. Tune it to 25Hz and have fun with it - not 44 Hz. Same with the Dayton - the Titanic is used everywhere as a HT sub; most people tune it to 20-25Hz for SQ. Elemental Designs has a horrible reputation as a company (very poor customer service in the past). It's a decent sub, but it's hard to look past it's reputation.
The only sub on your list that would even be worth tuning that high is the Type R, but most people tune it to the low/mid 30s because it's capable of decent SQ, while still getting pretty loud. If you want to tune something to 44Hz (which would be next to horrible for daily SQ), do yourself a favour and buy an SPL sub and alot more power. People normally tune their enclosures to the mid-40s/low 50s for pure SPL competition setups, but they run a hellovalot more power than a single bd500.1.
Tuned to 35Hz or (preferably) less, any of the subs you list would be great. For SQ I would take the SS, followed closely by the Titanic. For anything close to being called SPL, take the Type R.
The 50-50-90 rule: Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.
Well, I'm not going for strictly SQ or SPL...I want it to be somewhat loud without sounding like crap. I noticed with the SS that the recommended tuning was in the mid to low 30's (I think) and it had me rethinking my current setup. Anyway, I'm going to reconfigure my port to about 30 Hz probably go with the SS. Thanks, I appreciate your advice. Also, I never knew that about ED...thanks.

If you want a good mix between SPL and SQ...tuning somewhere in the 33-35 range works pretty good.
Make sure that box is 2.7 cubes net (after subtracting sub and port displacement) cause the box will shrink faster after you subtract displacements. I'd make it a little over 3 cubes total...then go from there.
RE Audio
Well, the box is already built. It's roughly 2.7 cubes before sub and port displacement but shouldn't the sub and port together only displace approx. 0.3 cubic feet?? I also have to take into consideration the length of my port in relation to the bottom of the sub. I'm coming up with a port length of around 9" to be about 30Hz (4" round aeroport, length not including flanges)

Taht will probably be o.k. I would have went biger on the port area though.....like a 6" aero.
RE Audio
I wish I could've. As it is, I'm going to have some clearence issues from the bottom of the magnet to the tip of the port flange. I've actually decided to go with the Type R to get a bit more SPL and still stay somewhat clean. However, the Type R has a mounting depth of 9 5/8" and I only have roughly 7" to play with if the port flange hits dead center (impossible, since the port is more toward the rear of the box, on the side) but it still makes me nervous. I might have to go a bit higher and tune to approx. 37Hz but absolutely no higher...with I had the new sub to do some measuring...

Jesus christ kid, 44 hertz is way too high. Drop it to the mid 30's, it'll sound much better.
Alright, I've been thinking all this over and I've come to a decision....screw loud, I want some quality. Well, a bit of thump and a lot of distortion free, 25Hz lows...and I'm considering JL. I really like the 12W3v3's and I'm thinking of running two. Now, considering that I have to build a new enclosure, would you guys recommend sealed or ported? As quoted by JL in the owners manual, ported will gain about 3db of output but does it really affect the quality of these subs that much? Any other similar subs to recommend? I'm not going with JL just because of their mainstream appeal, I just think they are a good looking sub and I've heard wonderful things about the new v3's. Thanks.
Also, considering the limited trunk space of our J's, what dimensions of box do you recommend? (those of you with termlab)
