Buying a Sound Setup
Wednesday, June 14, 2006 7:56 AM
So I want to get a decent setup for my Fire, and I just wanted opinions. I know there is better out there, but these have been reccomended and I like what everyone has to say about them. I'm looking for a high quality setup that sounds nice and offers a lot. This includes subs, speakers, an amp, and a deck(anyone will do right?)

I'm looking to spend around 700-800.

I'm going with 2 subs, pre-enclosed, and my pick is MTX.

My first choice are these.

They seem reasonable for what my goal is, and the company seems great. I was going to go with the dual 10'' at 2 ohms.

I'm looking for an amp that will support this, without any problems, but I don't want to spend money on something that is way over what I need. would this work?

I tried reading this chart, but I can't tell what i'm looking for. Any help?

I don't even know where to start at with speakers, i'm jsut looking for some good quality ones that will fit in the stock mounts.

Thanks for any help or opinion you can provide.

Also, what is your thought on
this package? It seems like a good deal.

ok, those arent bad, but 700-800 for fronts, head unit, subs, apropriate box, and amp(s) is somewhat hard to get great sound.. but i will try my best... Alpine is my first recomendation on a head unit always, and a 9852 can be had on crutchfield for a decent price, warranty, free harness and free mounting kit.. so figure 200 for a nice amp with 3 preouts...

that puts us down to 600 left...
subs for all around function and bang for the buck.. Type-Rs (get dual 4 ohm coils to wire down to 1ohm)will never disapoint on a budget, lets assume 250 for a pair of 10s,
now down to 350 for amps and fronts...
if u can wait another 45 days, cadence will have their 79$ with free shipping on their CWM-6 kit comps again! can NOT be beat for value and amazing sound! but if you need this set up asap, wooferetc.com has the CDT 6.5 inch K seriese comps for 100 or their CL series comps for 140 with free shipping and free dynamat xtreme door kit!
so lets go and average say 100 for front comps, and then you just either make of have someone make some adapter baffles out of 3/4 inch mdf, should give ample clearance both directions...so say 100 there...
now thats 250 for a mono amp putting out say 700-1000 watts RMS at 1 ohm and another 2 channel putting out 75-125 RMX per channel at 4 ohms.... cuttin it close BUT check out ikesound.com for Directed Audio and Orion and Viper refurb amps (factory refurbs are FINE! and those are all DEI companies, and DEI makes damn quality amps!! good luck finding everything in your price range man!

On the other hand....you have other fingers.

I just bought a 20 inch widescreen ultrasharp flat pannel..I'm going to have to subscribe to the high quality porn places now......damn

Wow that was pretty detailed!

I could go up to 900 if it was worth it, like if there is a big difference on the type-r's to something else.

I will definetly look into the alpine, and i could wait 45 days for the fronts.

Where can I find Type-R's on the web (the most trusted retailer?)

Then the box, with the type-r's, bandpass, sealed, or something else?

Here you go: Alpine 10" Type-R sub $109.99 from sonicelectronix.com Those are the 10" dual 4 Ohms sub. They have great prices, good reviews for research, and give the specs of the sub right on the page. That is where I am gonna buy my audio stuff.

For the box: I have researched that Type-R subs love ported boxes and I was told to talk to JD from soundsthatpound.com by JLAudioCavalier. He said JD is the man for custom built enclosures and is a great man to deal with. You can send him the specs for your subs and it is about $80-$100 (or more for more custom designs) for your custom built box, cheaper and better quality than most prefabbed boxes. He said he can even wrap the box in anything you want (suede, carpet, vinyl and much more). Go to that site and contact JD.

I look to get two 12" Type-R subs whenever I get the money. I will be pushing these with an Audison LRx 1.400 amp (900 watts) for $499.99.

Hope that helps...

Atk reppin up JD! another guy who was talking to me for a while about sound systems (JumpinJer12 on CAF), actualy just got his box from JD and loves it and cant wait to put it in. And Sonicelectronix.com is a good place, also look into OnlineCarStereo.com and Wooferetc.com and ikesound.com those are the 4 internet retailers i prefer as far as customer service and great prices go... let me give some more info cuz im just in the mood...

Box.... www.Soundsthatpound.com e-mail JD about custom building a box for the 2 10 inch Type-R's, they're a very popular sub and im sure he has tuning specs down to a science on those!

Subs... well... all the mentioned places carry Type-Rs but in order from first to last of who I personaly prefer: www.woofersetc.com
www.onlinecarstereo.com
www.ikesound.com
www.sonicelectronix.com

Front comps: now for the baffle rings to make the 6.5 inch mid drivers fit where the stock 4x6's were, im sure JD can whip some up, using 3/4 inch MDF for those should also act as a spacer to allow enough clearance so the window does not hit, and the mids excursion should also clear the door pannel. For the comps themselves, considering you want great sound on a somewhat slim budget i say these are the absolute best options:

Option A: wait about 40-45 days for Cadence to get more factory surplus CWM-6 Kits available, type in FREESHIP for a coupon code when ordering. BAM amazing sound that will compete with(and IMO blow away) Type-R comps for $79 shipped

Option B: you want them sooner, want great sound quality at a still affordable price, www.woofersetc.com click on CDT Audio on the right collum, click on component speakers, sort by lowest price, you will find the $99 K series 6.5 inch comps. great sound, great price, by far one of the more reputable names in sound quality out there!!

Option C: you dont want to wait for the Cadence's and maybe you are willing to drop a little extra money to get even better, clearer, and all around MORE sound out of your front stage... www.woofersetc.com FRONT PAGE they have the clickable ad for the CDT Classic series 6.5 inch comps with FREE SHIPPING as well as free monster cable(used to be free dynamat door kit but i guess they ran out or something). total cost $139.99 shipped. UNBEATABLE PRICE TO SOUND RATIO HERE!

Now, Amps.... so you are looking for 700-1000W RMS out of a mono amp at 1 ohm for the subs... lets see what i can find for a quality product at a great price....
Option A: http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=3193

Option B: http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=2462

As far as the high quality brands i prefer amps from, those are the 2 best suited for you in the best price range i could find to power those subs nicely.

Now a comp amp... lets say 75(lowballing the comps on power) up to 125(little head room), at 4 ohms 2 channel and see what i can find...

Option A: Absolutely unbeatable price, quality, and power: http://ikesound.com/product-product_id/3593 (refurb, so availability is very sketchy, basicaly, first come first serve here)

Option B: Great quality, unbeatable price, only 75w RMS (will get the job done, but the comps will def shine with more power) http://ikesound.com/product-product_id/4236

Option C: good quality, brand new(not that refurbs are a problem, the replace bad parts or boars, not fix em), middle road power (85rms), great price http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=3175

Option D: Little more cash, tons of power, awesome amp all around: http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=3176

that leaves us with the head unit.... here would be my choices, assuming lets say your price range here is 150-250 thats a decent price range for a decent head unit with good sound quality, plenty of functions and good quality...
And again, i like Crutchfield for head units, because theyre not that much more expensive than any other retailer, u get a factory warranty, free harness, and free mounting kit (witch evens out to either making total cost equal to or less than if u bought it on another site and had to get those seperate)!
And also, between Alpine and Eclipse (my 2 favorite deck companies), there are going to be a lot of choices listed here....

Option A: Alpine CDA-9852 http://www.crutchfield.com/S-sQW3WwAT3dP/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=300&I=500CDE9852

Option B: Alpine CDA-9856 http://www.crutchfield.com/S-sQW3WwAT3dP/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=300&I=500CDA9856

Option C: Alpine CDA-9853 http://www.crutchfield.com/S-sQW3WwAT3dP/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=300&I=500CDA9853 (slightly over 250, and if u dont mind learning the pesky glide touch controls, very nice head unit here)

Option D: Eclipse CD1000 http://www.crutchfield.com/S-sQW3WwAT3dP/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=300&I=099CD1000

Option E: Eclipse CD2000 http://www.crutchfield.com/S-sQW3WwAT3dP/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=300&I=099CD2000

Option F: Eclipse CD3000 http://www.crutchfield.com/S-sQW3WwAT3dP/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=300&I=099CD3000

Alright, I think thats everything.. wiring kit, factor in about 40-60 bucks for everything, DO THE INSTALL YOURSELF its so much fun to learn how to do this stuff, and its more personal value when the job is done! if you have any questions ask the forum, sign up on caraudioforum.com and ask there, or if u want to just talk to one person, who is very enthusiastic about helping people out as much as possible, IM me at JLAudioCavalier or e mail me at JLAudioCavalier@aol.com otherwise, u can PM me on here or on CAF.... i think that about covered everything and i had a ton of fun writing this all up!
