Type R Getting Warm
Sunday, June 18, 2006 7:57 PM
I got a 12" type R in a ported box and i was wondering every once in awhile it will get warm.

And when my buddy had his in his stratus his actually burned a hole thru. Voice coils caught on fire and the sub melted from the inside out.

And everyonce in awhile I would feel it and u can kinda of smell it and i dont want that to happen to mine that is why i was wondering what would cause it to get warm?

Ne suggestions or ideas would be great wojo gave me kinda of an idea

yeah. cause of the voicecoils. when they creat friction between the cone and the coil they warm up. and then theres the elecron flow throughout the coils to that create heat. but its ok for them to get warm. just not hott to the touch. thats whta the hole in the back of the magnet is for is cooling

my guess is its not proper tunign in the amp, if your tuning is messed up the sub won't move how it should, if it doesn't move it desn't cool itself liek its surpossed to

half is often too much.

It was probably wired wrong. A couple years ago, I accidently wired one of my subs incorrectly when I was in a hurry. That combined with having the gain too high caused the voice coils to fry. It was hot and very very stinky. Sounds a lot like what your friend was experiencing.

grrr.... clipping equals extra heat. It is very bad on nice subs like the type r's.. What kinda amp do you have?

If it smells like really strong white glue, or like "burning dust" (i like to describe it as an abnormally clean smell), the voice coils are starting to burn. I've smelled it all too often, my camry was hotboxed in smoke from a pair of subs as well. I also used to blow up the $30 jensen subs from wally world for @!#$s and giggles

so you are trying to say the gain isn't a volume control?

next thing you know people will be saying the earth is round
