just wondering about a double din stereo. I want to replace the stock CD player in my 2002 Sunfire with a Kenwood DPX-501 (a friend can help me get a good deal). Anyway will this double din fit or will i have to do a lot of mods?? I prefer the stock look and keep the surprises underneath.
Appreciate the help!
Yes you can do a double dim by trimming the surrounding trim panal. you may also want ot trim any excess plastic out of the back to give you more room.
Also, this needs to be moved to newbi or audio forums, and Fill out your profile.
are there any double din styles out there that will work with having to mod anything in the front of the dash??
Nope. Your dash opening is 1.5 Din, the opening behind the dash trim is 2 din.
@!#$ty. Thankx for the info... makes my choices a little easier as i dont want to have to mod the daash. I plan to put the stock stereo back in if i ever sell (if i still want the stereo... but never know).
Will ask one other q..... is the monsoon factory stereo a self ampilifed stereo... sort of the same way a aftermarket is that i would get better respose in my speakers compared to just running the factory plain cd player???
thanks again
monsoon has an amp in the trunk, drivers side behind carpet

there is a few aftermarket companys that do make "oversized" head units for GM cars. i know pioneer used to make one, but im not sure if they still do. there rare, personally i think it was a passing thing.

I have a din and a half Alpine CDA-D857 if you're interrested.
I won't go into details here but if you're interrested contact me at fox_ilnqnp@trashmail.net
I appreciate all the help everyone. Think i will just take my time and try and figure the best course to go. Concentrate on the speakers for now and look at the head unit later. I want to keep a clean stock look so to speak as will have to sell it eventually.
Thanks again.
02 sunfire?
you have a double din opening
it was only the pre 00 cars that have a 1.5 din hole
Are you sure??
How do you know and where did you find out??
Sorry if I sound mean, I just wanna finally end the debate of if I have a 1.5 or a 2 din because I could swear 2 din will fit without modding.

Kenwood makes a few decks that will fit directly. they are the DDX models. I have the DDX-7015 in mine.
i got a double din eclipse dvd/navagation unit. its a 6.5" screen, and it had 2 cd clots behind the screen. Im selling it for 900$. And it comes with EVERYTHING you need to install it into your car. Thats the door chime modual ( so you keep you doorchime, and the radio stays on untill you open the door), double din mounting bracket, and antenna adaptor.). Letme know. scott_studman@hotmail.com
i know just from buying adapter plates for single din radios
i have a 96 and a buddy of mine has a 01, the 01 can house 2 single din decks no prob, where as mine well it cant
its pretty easy to tell, just find a friend with a different year car (if you have a 95-99, find 1 with a 00+) you will easily see that there is a difference
I dunno man, I have an 03 Fire. The opening behind is double-din, but the trim surround only allows a 1.5 din to fit. I have a 1.5din Radio adapter, it holds my pioneer din and has a .5 din opening for a seperate equalizer.
It is possible tho to have a double din, if its design is centered and fits through the trim opening.
i have no idea how you have a 1.5 din adapter,
i am 100% sure that any J made after 2000 has a double din opening
