Installing HU Today - Couple ?'s
Monday, July 17, 2006 3:27 PM
I've been reading through this site ever since I found it earlier today, and it has motivated me to finally install my one year old, still in the package clarion HU. I've read many tutorials, and I think I am ready.

I just have a few things I am not sure of, before I start.

First of all, from what I have gathered, once I remove the entire dash it is all just plugging matching wires in together with a wiring harness, is this correct? Also, to power the HU, I understand that I must fuse it to a 12v switched wire. Many things I've read say that your wiper fuse is the easiest way to go. I located my wiper fuse in the fuse panel, but I don't completly understand what I am suppose to do with it. Do I completly remove the chip from the fuse panel? Will I lose wiper functionality?

Sorry for the lame questions, but I have never done any car work or electrical work in my life, so I am in the dark and I need to learn somehow :-)

Thanks in advance.

what wiring harness are you using?

to tap into the wiper fuse, just go to autozone and get a fuse tap. it allows you to change one fuse into two basically.

Or just take that power wire and do it old school, wrap it around the post on the fuse and plug the fuse back in. Very Simple and it works fine.

not a very safe way to do things. You should really have a fuse on each wire.

You need to buy a wiring harness $8 at WalMart,
a General Motors antenna adapter if it is not included with the harness $4,
and a installation mounting kit $12

Your cd player's wiring gets hooked up to the wiring harness you need to buy. Just match the colors up, and solder your connections. When you are done the harness plugs into the car.

The plastic installation mounting kit fits the hole in the dash so there are no gaps. You should have a metal sleeve around your cd player called the "basket". Slide the Basket into the hole in the installation mounting kit and bend the tabs out, so the basket can not slide back out of the installation mounting kit and is secure and stiff. The cd player then slides into the basket and will lock itself in place.

You may need to cut part of the dash in the back of the stock opening. The stock stereo is not as deep as your new cd player, so it may stick out too far.

You should not need to get a power wire from your wiper fuse, I have never had to do that. What year is your vehicle?

I have a 2000 z24 Cavvy

I was reading a howto, and it says I need to find a 12v switched wire to fuse into.

Quote:

The switched +12V wire

In order to turn your new aftermarket deck on and off with the ignition, you have to tap onto a wire that carries +12V when the car is ON and in ACC. There's a brown wire in the ignition harness that you can tap. It's a heavy wire (12 gauge) compared to most other wires around it. There arealso two red wires, and a yellow, pink and orange there too - if GM changes the wire colours, use a voltmeter to check which wire carries +12V during the ACC and ON key positions. If you are tapping this wire - FUSE IT!

An 'easy' alternative is to use a fuse tap on the windshield wiper fuse. This is a plug which replaces the factory fuse and adds a new fuse (along with the original one) and has a wire for the new circuit. Using the windshield wiper fuse is an old installer trick, and it sure does work! Plus by using the fuse tap, you don't have to cut any of the factory wiring. You also don't need to worry about overloading any existing circuits, because ineffect you are creating a new one"

Yes I know about that how to as well. How I was telling you that you can do it, will take out the step to where you have to go intot the steering column, take the 12v and run it to your fuse box and wrap the bare end wire onto the post for the fuse and plug the fuse back in, that is an old school trick to do it.

for the last time, THAT IS NOT THE PROPER WAY TO DO IT.

fuse the new wire you add in seperately...keep your car safe.

your wiper needs a fuse...and your stereo needs a seperate fuse.

Thank you everyone for your help.

Lastly, I am assuming the wire will have no choice but to be exposed if I put it on the wiper fuse.

Is the only alternative going into my steering column?

Someone explain this seperate power wire thing to me for a head unit. I have never run into this yet at work. Is it a 2k+ thing or what?

yes, this is for 00' and up.

in these models, the radio is not turned on by a switched 12v wire, it has the class 2 wiring, and it told by the computer when to turn on. so there is NO ignition wire in the factory radio harness.

I didn't know that. Good thing I have never put a cd player in a 2K+ Jbody. You do use a regular GM harness, and do not need to relocate the stock radio with the $100 harness, correct? The customer only loses door chimes?

they do make a harness that has a chime module and doesn't require you to run the switched wire, but it is costly.

Use the metra harness for a geo tracker (part number is in the sticky) then just run the ignition wire seperate. with this you DO lose the chimes.

2000 cavalier head unit is easy to install, I did my half hour on my 01 cavalier, Just remember Addam Tait, Dont get ripped off buying the relocation wiring harness you dont need it.

You need to buy a wiring harness $8 at WalMart,
a General Motors antenna adapter if it is not included with the harness $4,
and a installation mounting kit $12

dont just hack youre wiring on youre car it causes more problems in future wiring shorts as well.
