how do i find out what type of amp i should use? is there a formula or a rule of thumb like there is for psu's for computers (ie, 75% of psu > computer usage)
- More Wattage is better.
- What kind of subs do you have? Match the rms rating of the subs with the rms rating of the amp.
- Read reviews on certain brands or ask around, make sure they're reliable.
Other than that, there isn't really a "Rule of Thumb."
they are the KFC-XW1300DVC kenwood 13" peak of 2000 and rms of 500+500. so for 2 of them i only want a 2000watt amp?
if their RMS rating is 500 each, and you have 2. grab a 1000 watt RMS amp, make sure it's 1 ohm stable, or if they are 2 ohm DVC, a 0.5 ohm stable amp (expensive). Of course the impedance ratings I just gave you are only if you plan on wiring in parallel (that's + to +, - to -) never go by max ratings as they are generally just for bass burps (short bursts of deep bass). you have more options but I'm too tired to list em all.
Hey after reading the Car Audio and Electronics Review Kenwood recomends 1600-2000w RMS to each sub. So your gonna need eather a mono amp at 3500-4000 w RMS at 1 ohm of two amps with 1600-2000w RMS at 2 ohms. We need to know how much your looking to spend. You gonna be looking at some VERY expensive amps.

I'm rather impressed - 500rms Kenwood subs that can take 1600-2000rms each. I would never have thought that from Kenwood. Not bad, not bad at all.
Putting rated RMS power into a sub is ideal, but you don't NEED to put full rms power into a sub. If you go with less, you won't get full performance out of it, but it won't hurt anything providing you don't crank the gains and feed them clipped power.
One thing that people always forget is that doubling your power only gains you 3db theoretically. It takes a 10dB gain to perceive something as being twice as loud.
Take a look at Hifonics (Brutus or XX lines). Good cheap power.

well from what i could find it is 2000 watts peak, and they are dual voice coils i got the 500+500 stat from the australian website because the us website doesnt have rms listed at all. so i dont really know what the rms power is for this, but the 500+500 was for one sub according to what i could find not two. i have found other sites saying that rms is 1000watts. the ohm rating is 3ohm+3ohm, once again, guessing they have two numbers because of the dual coils; i was told that 3ohms is an odd number to have and that it is probably more like 2.something and they were roounding up to keep people from being dissappointed.
i have been saving up and buying peice by peice for my entire system, nothing is in the car yet. basically i will spend what ever i need to to get the best possible sound.
oh, yeah, which issue was that review in? i must have missed it
kenwoods website says 3
KFC-XW1300DVC these are the ones i have. but the store i bought it said the ohms are more than 2 but less than 3. here is a copy of the instruction manual
manual, this is what kenwood claims. stats are at the bottom of page 3 and more in depth specification on page 8.
I dont have a budget i will spend whatever it takes for the best peroformance.
Thank you guys, you have all helped
