usb starter?
Tuesday, July 25, 2006 1:42 PM
i don't know if this has been done before, but i've been brainstorming for the past few hours of how to make this work. my idea is to have a flash drive as a key to your car. you have a female usb jack in the dash, plug it in, and have a little button on the drive as a start button. the idea is extremely simple really. the data sheets for USB flash drive controllers can be found on the internet. you can even buy a controller and start from scratch. anyway, the start button would be programmed to initiate a small serial stream of data from the flash drive to a small logic device in the dash. when the device in the dash receives the correct data, it clears its memory and sends a pulse to a relay, which starts the car the exact same way as a push button start. also, you could eliminate the starter altogether by having the accessory power come on when the drive is inserted and recognized, then actually start it by pushing the button. would this even be practical to do though? comments please...

Same concept as a remote starter.

Might be able to integrate that into your idea.

I say go for it. Be original.

its possible, but logic devices arent cheap. remote starters are mass produced so they are cheaper. this is something completely custom. just think about the mercedez that use those plastic key fobs that you insert and turn to start the car. they send a signal to a device and then allow the car to be started. just call your local mercedez dealership and find out how much those are and that will give you atleast an estimate on how much it will cost you.

i have seen those mercedes starters, and yea, that's pretty much the same idea. i'm majoring in electrical & computer engineering right now, and i have to come up with a big project to design and build in a few years. all of these materials (programmable logic devices, programming software, 100 year old professors) will be readily available. i just have to think of some ideas to make it more complicated and original (hint hint).

oh if thats the caase, then definatly go for it. i am in electrical engineering automated systems at georgian college in barrie ontario. me and a few friends are building a submersable drone for our big tech project.

if you want any help or ideas, let me know. you can shoot me an email at robolivieri@hotmail.com

if you could do something like the prius, just get in the car and push start I'd be all over it.

that could be done pretty easily. all you need to do is wire in a relay in series with the ignition. you need something to transmit a signal wirelessly, something to recieve that signal, then the reciever would then send the signal to the relay to complete the circuit. once the circuit is completed, it would then allow the car to be started with the push button.

it sounds complicated, but its not all that hard.

for your usb starter, all you need is either a PLC (shoebox design will do), a usb input, something to scan a certain directory for a specific file on the usb drive, then the plc can complete the circuit with the relay. you can also use an eprom and an i/o card.

That's exactly what i was thinking of, it really would be pretty easy. I wish i could get started on this, but i'm currently working as a co-op at an airline, and wont go back to college for another month or so.

but now you've sparked my interest with the idea of a wireless sort of start method. i mean, thinking about it now, you could have a small wireless transmitter of some sort, possibly placed in a wristwatch or what have you. that way, you could put a receiver somewhere in the car (no cutting this way ) that could control many functions. for instance, if you could build up enough security, you could have the car unlock itself when you come within a certain radius, as well as prime a relay to start the car with a push of a button somewhere on the dash. man this is really giving me some good ideas!

It would be incredibly easy to duplicate a USB key though, theft would be a pretty bad issue.

that sounds just like RFID. Lexus is doing that already IIRC.

I think other companies are doing it also. buttons on the doors to lock/unlock if you're nearby with a key in your pocket/purse. some just have a little storage spot for your key fob in the car and the pushbutton start.

yeah tons of companies are doing that. Doesnt anyone remeber the post on wireless thives. Using laptops to "talk" to the car and unlock it and start it. Beckam had two BMWs stolen that way...

GM, if they havent offered it yet, will have it out soon. or it least they were advertising it..

you might want to look into a serial/com port interface, you can use the USB device as the key, bt you'd want to come out of the computer on the com/serial port. One bad thing, you'd have to wait for your computer to boot before you can start your car

the wireless one would be preety easy to do anyways. all you need is a 2-way starter with remote locks and your set. now instead of a remote, put it into a watch or whatever else you want. wouldnt be too hard to do.

now i know my school either wants us to make something new or something that is already made better. they dont want us to make something that we can just as easily go out and buy and package it off as our tech project.

the usb thing would be a completely different version, but along the same lines as a remote starter. the wireless thing would be pretty cool, just have to make it different.

seems like you have some decisions to make.

if you think what I talked about is easy you have another thing coming. Its only easy if you don't want it secure.
