Installing HU
Tuesday, August 01, 2006 1:03 PM
Apparently this is the most compicated thing even for tweeter. I asked them to install it, and they did not even realise that they needed the crazy $70 wiring harness. I was like, "There is not other way but to use the $70 one?" And they said no. I have an 03 fire, and right now I don't know if I should be pissed at GM for their @!#$ty electronic system in the car, or at tweeter for not telling me this the first time.

I would be mad at Tweeter, since you do not need that $70 wiring harness, unless you want those dings that tell you that you left your lights on and such. Have you tried doing a search? There are instructions on how to do this without that expensive harness. I have replaced my HU in my 05 Cav and used the regular harness for the install. All you have to do is find a 12V source, such as wipers, and such. I just went old school with it and wired the 12V constant to the fuse panel, wrapped the bare end around a fuse and pluged the fuse back in, power to the HU.

X2. I did it the same way with my 2000. The harness is $12-25usd depending on where you buy it.

I seriously could not find the harness anywhere. There were things like 88+, 91-99, then any 2000+ GM harness did not include the sunfire.

Hmmm.... sticky at the top of the forum.... or the FAQ entry in the library.... or even a google search would have helped you find the answers you'd need to know that most of the 2000+ ones would actually work (except, disable your door chimes)...

But I digress...

I don't know what is worse, the fact you didn't find this out first or that 05cav LS Sedan and El Fuego agreed on something

I'm leaning towards the agreement though

I went to circuit city to ask for a harness.. They told me the only way to do it was with the $99.00 harness, so I told them to suck me and bought one for just under $10.00 at Wal-mart.

GG Circuit city.

I also used my wiper fuse for my power source, there is an opening in the left side of the HU compartment, you can run the power wire right through there over to your fuse panel and it won't show. I would recommend a fuse splitter from auto-zone for this.

You do know that these retail stores are required to sell you the correct harness? If they sell you a cheap one and give you an alternate way to do it, they can be at fault if something happens.

i told tweeter to screw off, got my money back, bought the later one for the GM vehicles, and hooked it up in like 90 minutes.

The one thing that you have to remember is that the stores idea of the correct harness is the one that they want like $100 for. What could possible happen, besides that you wire the HU wrong and fry things, that would not be there fault anyhow.

most of the kids working at places like that don't know the difference anyway, they only know what the book tells them.

The guy at tweeter that was going to do the install goes to my school, and I see him at some parties sometime so i'm going to ask him what was up with the whole thing. I'm sure he'll say that they couldn't use the cheaper one because it's not the correct harness so if something did go wrong I could blame them.

That's true. I work at a Best Buy and I tell the J-body customer's how it is. Either you buy the expensive ass harness from us, or hit up j-body.org and find alternates. But if it's done that way, we cannot warranty the headunit.

Now Corsica Dude, that I can respect, and totally understand. That is also cool that you do give them a hint that they can use it, and they just have to find the information and do it themselves.

I work at circuit city and tell my customers the same thing for me to install it we have to use the expensive harness because of the chimes cause if you forget to put your seatbelt on and there is no chime and you get in an accident now im responsiable
