HO Alt suitable?
Monday, July 31, 2006 5:54 PM
Well, I'm looking in to getting a HO alt. for my system (mostly for the 2nd batt.) and I was just wondering if 85 amps is high enough at idle. It's a 180 amp alt, but I just need to know if it's got enough juice flowing at idle. My system is an Orion HCCA-D2400 2400 watt amp, and a Rockford Fosgate T210D2 10" woofer. Thanks for any input.

get your system load tested at an autoparts store like autozone, then you will know how many amps you are drawing, and youlle be able to decide if 85 amps at idle is good enough.

Most alt only put out 75 to 100 amps at idle anyway. My 190 amp alt only puts out 93 at 900 RPMs but kicks up at 1200 and full 190 amps at 1500. They do it so that its not so much strain at idle, will also cause unstable idle if it is at full output at idle. Streetable HO alts are designed this way on purpose. Just my 2 cents.
