wtf???? wrong impedences????
Thursday, August 03, 2006 2:05 PM
ok today i did the gain setting that is talked about on the site and while i was doin it i noticed one sub being louder than the other, so i decided to test the impedences and while they are suppossed to be 2ohms the left is reading 3 and the right is readin 5? It is a dvc sub at 4 ohms a coil with the colis wired in parallel to produce 2 ohms and each set is run to its own channel on the amp. when i installed them i tested and both came out to 2 ohms apeice, what would cause them to change resistance other than loose wiring because they are in a bandpass box and i really dont want to have to take it apart unless i have to. i have only pused 1/3 of the rated rms max on the subs so they should be blown or fryed. so what would cause this and how would i fix it? also is this quite common? the system specs are 2 pyramid imperial class dvc 12's and a scoche 550 watt amp. not the best but hey it works. thanks for any help.

Were they both playing at the same time when you though one was louder? If so, one of them is out of phase.

Take the + and - of ONE speaker and reverse it. Either on the amp or on the speaker, whichever is easier for you.

Are the boxes ported or sealed? If sealed, one might be leaking air.

I obviously missed some stuff in your post :\
I'm not sure why one would be 3 and one would be 5. Sounds like you'll need to dismantle your box :O

Wait for other suggestions first though. There are many more credible sources than me here.

thanks for help, bandpass is both ported and sealed. i have had problems with leaky boxes before so when i assembled this one every crack and crevice was sealed with bath tub silicone. thats why i dont want to take it apart because it will probably destroy the box, but it is also why i tested impedences before final assembly... it was a cheap multimeter but its never givin wrong readings before, the only other possibilty is i used small wire inside the box (probably too small) and it has burned up. eithr way looks like its time for a new box, but this time probably ported, bandpass is too picky.

if you are trying to test the impedence with a multi meter, especially a cheap one, thats probably why you are getting different readings.

impedeance or XL is measured in ohms, just like resitance. the difference here is, impeadance involves an angle. you can not measure impeadance with an ohmic resistive multimeter. you need to either have something that strickly measures impeadance or mulitmeter that has an impeadance selection on it.

i bet if you hooked up your meter the same why you did and moved the cone of that speaker you were checking in and out you would find the reading changed.

the only why the XL can change is if some of the turns on the coil shorted out, which is possible. i think you where measuring resistance, not XL, and that you subs are out of phase which is why one sounded louder.

Injection is nice but id rather be BLOWN!

95 % of 4th order boxes sound like complete crap. (since 94 % are prefabs and that last 1 % are boxes made by @!#$ ups.)

soon as i can get a new box this one is gettin torn apart to remove and test the subs and if they are good, put in a ported box.could possibly be out of phase i can check that in the morning, but yup all the meter read was resistence so its a good possibilitty i wasnt reading what was really my impedence. maybe soon i wiil be asking for help designing a box. thanks again ya'll.
