I am either buying or building a sub box for a 10" Infinity sub with a little over 312 rms power. Under the circumstances, would you recommend I use a sealed or ported box? I would like more volume but tight-sounding lows are number one to me. If anyone has any pros\cons on either I would appreciate it. Thanks!
Sealed will be tighter than anything, with most speakers. They also have a pretty even sound curve, meaning most hz will be the same loudness. (not to your ears, but to a meter)
Porting will reinforce the lows, and if your going with a smaller speaker you'll have "tighter" sound. It tends to make the sound a bit more boomy, but if you do it right, you can make it sound flawless.
Some of the more experienced people around here will definately be able to help with box design. (port sizes, volumes, etc.)
Ported fo life...
If built right you don't lose any noticable sound quality...and you gain approx. 3Db's ....but they take up more room compared to sealed but whatever

If you have the original packaging, there should be a paper (or w. the owners manual) with a list of letters and numbers that probally mean nothing to you. They are the Thiele-Small parameters and will tell you basically exactly what size and what kind of enclosure to build. If you look for something called QTS, if it is lower then .4, building a ported box will be "better" for the sub. Anything higher should be in a sealed. You will get the most out of it if you follow those guidelines. (Anyone correct me if I am wrong about the QTS.)
But if you are looking for more boom, go ported. If you want a tighter sounding bass, go sealed.

Ban low-performance cars, not high-performance ones.
Ported aint boomy if built correctly...
