Sealed or ported for MTX 12"

What type and what size box do you audio gurus recommend for running a MTX MXS1204 12" superwoofer? I listen to both rap and heavy metal. I am confused because the manual that came with the sub that has recommended box dimensions varies from the manufactures website even though they are the same model and year. I am running a MTX TC4002 amp (in case that makes a differnce when running a sealed box)

Thanks

Overall sealed will sound better, but ported will be louder. If it were me, I'd go with a ported one. Just be sure it's to specs or it may sound like sh!t.

Sold 6/30/06.

if you make it right it'll be louder and sound just as good....Go ported, and if you're not sure how...get someone know hows how, or do some research 1st....Building a ported box is much less forgivin than going sealed, so if you're going to do it, and you don't understand how porting works, just build a sealed..... Usually Pre-Fab boxes are tuned WAY too high...like 45~ i've seen em...if you know what tuning frequency is anyway, but thats a whole different topic...bottom line, if you know how, go ported, if not, stick with sealed

you want to bump, then they will bump and hit real hard and a lot good.

I was leaning towards ported, the plans I have got have the box tuned to 35hz, which I imagine is what most people tune it to 33-38hz?. Just wondering because I have got one of them pre-fab mtx boxes and it doesn't hit lows to well and the box measurements are several inches off on all sides to what i plan on building it to.

I got liquid nail glue, some screws, and clear silicone. I plan on using liquid nail all around to hold the box together and silicone glue along the inside seams to seal it. Should i put two sheets of mdf where the woofer will be mounted for bracing reasons? Do you guys use screws?

ex: woofer

No, i don't think you'll need 2 sheets of 3/4 inch MDF, that stuff is pretty strong...

Ported around that frequency is what most people do, give you a nice sound with most woofers...If you know what ur doing, then by all means go ported. Using screws + woodglue or liquid nail should hold it together very well...The screws are basically just to hold it until the glue drys so nails work too, but i find screws easy enough but sometimes they'll give you a little split in the wood, which doesnt effect anything...

No offense but you are definately confused if you listen to rap and heavy metal talk about culture clash? Rock all the way baby!! Anyway I had a 10" mtx actually two 10" mtx , a 10" infinity perfect and now a 12" mtx all sealed done right they will pound great IN the car, but not much outside which works for me

Its all about the pain...The Jewelry and Ink are just souvinirs

Culture clash? Dude, I listen to Rock, Rap, R&B, Clasical, Techno/Trance/Electronica, SOME jazz, NO COUNTRY, some metal, and I usually change the station if I hear pop. And what's weird is that most of my friends listen to the same kind of music I listen to, so I guess our whole culture is culturally confused....lol. If it hits hard, get the bigger subs, if it hits moderate and has guitar distortion get some medium subs, and if there's no bass then why do you care about subs. Same goes for boxes, Sealed are for quality, ported are for loudness, and bandpass is for a little bit of both from what I understand. But that is all in a nutshell, I'm still trying to decide myself and I've been researching boxes for about a month now.
