Rear speakers only work when it gets hot in the car
Friday, October 06, 2006 9:32 PM
Hi, everyone!

I own a 2000 Sunfire that exhibits a strange problem ... the rear speakers, and it's usually the rear right one, only work when it gets hot in the car (ie. after it's been sitting in the sun for a while). Any other time, and only the front speakers work.

I thought that maybe it was some kind of poor soldering job in the head unit that was always on the verge of contact/no contact, so I bought a JVC MP3/iPod head unit from FS today and installed it. Wiring wasn't too difficult, and I'm sure I did it correctly, as everything works just fine ... except for the rear speakers. Obviously the problem lies with the connection somewhere, or the speakers themselves.

Any thoughts or ideas? How would I go about tearing the car apart to see whether the previous owner maybe fiddled with the wiring and did a poor job of putting things back together?

I'd check the contacts on the actual speakers first, but it'd probably be wise to trace the wiring back and see if something got cut somewhere or something.

use a 9v battery.. positive to pos. on the speaker and negative to neg. and the speaker should move out.. if it does then your speaker is fine.. if it doesnt then you need new speakers

if it does then u have a bad connection.. in the line..

good luck

lol cuz thats easier than just testing the impedance... Just get a multimeter and check the impedance of the speakers

you want to bump, then they will bump and hit real hard and a lot good.

LOL

i think the 9 volt idea would work. and its a little cheaper than a multimeter. Not everyone has a multimeter layin around. I say just yank everything out, and re-wire it to your liking.. while ur at it, you could even dynomat it hehe... just an idea

disconnect the speakers, put in a set frequency, or a sweep, and check for AC voltage on the line...probably around 10 volts, ballparking it. but as long as you have ac voltage...your wiring is fine.
