Weird problem
Sunday, December 03, 2006 3:24 AM
Ok so I had been having problems with my batt going out every 6 months or so. So I got a yellow top. Last night I noticed that when at a stop in idle the headlights are dim then when I hit the gas they get brighter. So what do you guys think is the problem the alt? I might also add I got a smaller crank pulley and smaller alt pulley. Now I do hav ea system but I rarely ever use it and only really use it on the highway maybe once a month for a few minutes. Really starting to hate it since I can't see outta the mirrors when its on.

I'm thinking maybe the pullys won't charge at an idle.

might be a problem due to the pulleys. take a voltage reading with the car running at idle with the current pulleys, try swapping the stock pulleys back on and see if the voltage reading is higher. if it's the same and the voltage is low than you probably need a new alt. if the voltage goes up when you swap the stock pulleys back on then you know it was a problem caused by the pulleys. was it something you only started noticing after you put on the new pulleys? you should be at around 14.4 or so volts with the car running at idle. that's what you normally see on most cars. good luck.

The pulleys have been on for over a year and it's jsut starting to happen. I have gone through about 6 batteries since I bought the car 5 years ago. I don't have the stock pullies out here in cali so thats not gunna happen heh. Do you guys have any suggestions for an alt on where to go maybe a nice looking one for shows to

i have a 180 amp alternator on my car and i had to take the pulleys off because of the same reason. i have a red and yellow top and both of them would die. ever since i took the pulleys off i havent had a problem and i stay above 14 volt's.

Well im not thinking the pullies are doing it. I never had a problem with the battery voltage till recently. I am going thursday and getting my alt tested. My pullies are smaller crank and larger alt. I got it messed up the first time I put it up.

I believe its your pullies b/c an alternator goe bad quickly (usually NOT always) and if your batteries die slowly then maybe its b/c when you drive in town your most always idleling @ lights and in traffic so that when your losing a charge and slowly losing it. but of idle your system is working but if you lost a certain amount of your batteries capacity b/c it wouldn't charge at idle you most likely wont get that charge back so your battery will have gotten less as time goes on. Try your pullies ? if you don't have your stock ones that you removed hit up a Junk yard or buy from a parts store.

Ok went to get it looked at today. The guys said surprisingly the battery is perfect still. Thank you optima But my alt at idle puts out 0 and puts out normal amperage under acceleration. So I need to have that company above build me one that will hold up to my puliles and system Thanks guys never would have though to get a load test on everything. I would have just started to replace things in order of price starting with the battery heh. The guys at the shop even said for me they will wave there outside parts policy and help me out if I keep coming to them to get work done. So for little things I will go to them and bigger things the cheaper shop thats about 2 hours form me heh.
