I need more power... how do I get it.
Sunday, January 21, 2007 6:32 PM
Ok, I just finished out my sub and amp system in the back, and Im pulling some major power from my car. I already have a Optima yellow top, and the big 3 upgrade, and I still need more juice because my headlights and other lights dim on bass notes.

The options, as I see them, are either a 2nd battery hookup, or a high output alternator. I have been told caps, even 5+ fraud are useless for extremly high power applications. Now, for what I will be powering with all this stuff:

Current:
Alpine MRD-1005 Mono amp
2 Kicker CVR 12"s
Underbody & Interior neons
and some more minor electronics

I all also be adding a 2nd amp for my 6.5s in the front down the road.

Now, the question is, should I do a 2nd battery or bigger alt? What would you guys suggest for what I am going to be powering? I estimate a 2nd battery setup to cost me around $200-$250 for a battery and a hookup kit. If this was the path I would go, how would I go about it and what battery should I get? I am currently looking at This for $120. With This hookup kit for $100. Now, the only problem I see with that is this battery says its 850 amps, and the kit says its 250 amps? Would I need a bigger kit for it?

For a bigger alt, I was looking at www.exteremeamerage.com for a new alt. I was going to call them tommorow to get a price for the alt. For this, would yall suggest a 200, 250, or 300amp alternator? I do not know if you can get a amp that is to big... im completely new to alternators Lol.

Any help will be great, thanks !

DEFINITELY a bigger alternator!! That is where your power originates from! If you have too small of alt..you can put as many batteries in your car as you want. But if the alternator doesn't have enough power to constantly recharge all of them, it is useless. Go with a bigger alt, and your problems will be fixed.

do you have a power Cap if not you need one and if that system is killing your alternator you definately need one Im running easily 6 times that with one battery but with 2 40 farad caps

^^^^^ cap = crap. They're useless. It's like pissing on a forrest fire. Do the big 3, check on maybe a bigger alternator, something around 200 amps would be plenty for you.

^^ lmao..... Yeah caps...zzzzz.....+1 for the alternator...You definately don't need a 300. A 200amp one shouldn't be hard to find. I think you can get your stock one rewound to a higher output as well, if you have a shop around that does that. Maybe something else you can look into.

^^^ I'm curious as to how? I was pushing ~1200 in my cavalier with a stock alt, and the big three and my amp got fried within a couple months.

Cap = Band-Aid

Don't even bother...Don't try and cover up the problem..it likely won't even fix your problems anyway....Just fix the root of the problem..the alternator.

Where would the best place to get a 200amp alternator from? I was looking at www.exxesiveamperage.com but they said a 200amp w/ overdrive pully was like $300.00. Is this a good price for one of these? Im completly new to alt and pully info, any help would be good on where to get one of these.

hard to say what your problem, was ive had alts fried on cars with no systsems so your audio may not even have been the issue.

Ok, I found a 160amp alt on Ebay for sale for $169.99. Would 160 be enough for me or should I stick with getting a 200? I just noticed them seem to cost a lot more than the 160s

im running 750watts per 12 inch ( i got 2 ) and a large cap and thats it and its great .... doesnt dim the lights even when its pounding ...... but i was told i should get my alt rebuilt if im gonna be pumpign it constantly ..... getting it beefed up would cost 100 - 150 but get double the amp power from ur original ..... this is in toronto ontario .... dunno where ur from but theres many places around here u can get them rebuilt ...... that way u dont have to pay for the core price of the thing if u wer to buya new one ...
p.s im using a bosch stock alt and a ac delco battery ...... untill it dies or i notice a large dimming issue .... im not changing a thing .
