if you have a 96 without tach you can only swap it for a cluster w/tach or w/o tach from a cavalier 95-97 with a non digital odometer

non digital is it acutally has the wheels with numbers on them as you drive they move and tell you your car mileage. Digital is it has a little readout like a alarm- clock.

You'll have to take the odometer from the original cluster and install it in the new cluster, or get an odometer sticker from your tag agency or whatever that issues titles in your area and fill it out and stick it in the door jamb otherwise.

im planning on doing the same thing 95 2.2/auto sedan without tach and i have a 96 rag top 2.4/auto with the tach, is there any extra wire that needs to be hooked up for the tach signal?

Nope. All the info comes through your existing harness. Your current cluster just doesn't do anything with the tach info.

Now, someone else can correct me if I'm wrong, but if you have a 96-98, I do not believe you can use a cluster from a 95. The 95 didn't have the theft lock, so the newer car would be looking for info that's not there.
