sub wiring

Hey just a little question. If you have 2 subs wired in parallel (so say 2 4ohm subs wired to give 2ohm load) and connected to a mono amp, is the output of the amp shared between the 2 subs. Say amp is putting out 600rms. So does this mean that each sub is getting 300rms? Or would it not be equal and vary between the 2 subs.

I ask as friend of mine is looking into getting a new amp (old one gave out) so his subs can handle 300rms each and are wired at a 2ohm load in parallel. Doesn't know if safe to go with a 600rms amp or should it be lower and matched to one sub so that a 300rms amp powering both. I don't see it as the later but wanted to ask to be sure.

thanks

Yes, the subs will split the power, so you should get the 600w amp. In fact, it's actually safer to go overkill on the amp than to overplay a weak amp. Reason: clipping distortion will destroy your subs.

Yea, if he has a 300 watt amp powering 2 300 watt subs, then the subs won't be as loud as they can be, especially since the natural desire to push the subs to the limit will ultimately end up in turning up the gain setting too high and clipping the subs (clipping is when the amp is pushed past the wattage it can put out and you actually get a wave with it's peak and valley's cut off, which damages the subs). So tell him to get the 600 watt amp.
