I'm thinking of putting 5.25" or 6.5" components in the space under the rear windows of my third gen coupe. Has anyone ever done this - I'm worried about not having clearance for the speaker. My plan would be to just remove the whole plastic piece, cut out, and surface mount the components. I know there is some foam backer behind the plastic, but without removing like the whole rear of the interior, its hard to judge clearance.

I have a set of 3 way components back there. If you don't have the imaging correct, it'll sound like ass.

aslong as you miss the bracing you could probably mount a 12" back there. pull the pieces off to check on where the bracing is to make sure you miss it and you should be fine. keep the power low to them. will problaby sound bad to rear seat passengers.
