Rear speaker wiring question.. help asap!
Monday, December 24, 2007 3:21 PM
So I just got a new hu and speakers, front ones are hooked up no problem but now I'm working on the rear and noticed that they have 4 wires leading to them instead of two like the front. I can easily figure out which is positive and negative but I was just wondering since my new 6x9's have only one positive and one negative, do I just use one set of the incoming wires, or do I use all four? I know it's kind of a newbish question, but I'd rather not blow anything out.

TIA

Ok, after over an hour of searching and finding others asking the same questions (and getting no answers) I FINALLY found something.

One post says that all you need to use are the main + and - for each speaker. While another one says that you have to rerun wires from the hu to the rear speakers because of the "factory amp".

So my question is, where is this factory amp? And couldn't I just bypass it and run new wire from where the rear leads come from the harness straight in to the new speakers?

Thanks

factory amp is on the driver's side on a piece of sheet metal near the strut tower.

if you disconnect the factory amp you could re-use the wires... like you said extend the wires from the amp location up to the speakers. still i think those wires are pretty thin.. good for deck power maybe but nothing more.

Go to the Factory amp, located behgind the Trunk Carpet on the Driver Side in the rear quarter panel. Unplug the old wires from the speakers and leave them there incase you end up putting it back to stock.

find the input wires and cut them before they go into the amp

Brown/Yellow +/-
Dk. Blue/Lt. Blue +/-

Then simply run new wires from those to your new speakers.

OR

You can UN SOLDER the Midrange/Tweeter connections from your NEW speakers

Then you can extend those by soldering on some longer leads.

THEN

Hook up the 2 Connections on your NEW Speakers to the 2 wires from the factory that only play Bass

The other 2 wires you can wire to the Midrange/Tweeters you extended the wires on.

This way you can USE the Factory amp as it was designed. This is called BI-WIRING

GM considered our Rear 6x9's as 4 seperate Speakers on the PREMIUM SOUND Package.

That included 2 4x6 coaxials up front and 2 BI-AMPED and crossovered Rear 6x9's. Our 6x9 woofers were treated as Subwoofers somewhat.

Crappy subwoofers maybe. And yeah, I always wondered where my 5th and 6th speakers were since I was supposed to have the "premium 6 speaker sound system". In any case, I used just the main +/- on my new speakers and I'm getting awesome lows from the woofers and nice clear mids and highs coming from the tweeters, so who knows. I did find the amp in the back.. I think the hard drive in my computer is bigger than that thing lol.

So unless I'm imagining things, they work fine. No loss of bass and no static *shrug*
