I went to autozone because i have a check engine light on my car
they told me it was the relay for my radiator fan. i ended up buying it for like 15 dollars and it wasnt the problem.. I asked before i bought it if i could return it if it didnt work.. they said i couldn't.... well i took a look at my radiator fan it it wasnt moving.. i tried to move it with my hand and it was stuck.. i guess some snow got up in there and froze so it prevented the fan from moving, resulting in a blown fan motor? Can I still drive it around here? it is like 20 degrees at most.. middle of winter and I live in Maine.. Will I be ok to drive until I can afford another fan because I just quit my job

Wellll.....it will heat up less quickly and it wont over heat as fast, but yeah if you get stuck in traffic or leave your car running without moving, it will overheat, and faster than you think. Id head to the junkyard or something...
And be happy you only paid 15 bucks. My fan relay is 90-100 dollars
ouch.... so will I be alright for maybe a week? or do i need this asap??? how much do you think before i start calling.

Well you don't need a whole new fan, just the fan motor. And lucky for you(i hate you for this) a new fan motor can be had from advanced auto parts for anywhere from 24-50 dollars. Mine was 112 minimum...
I mean you could be alright for years to come, but i wouldnt want to take that chance. A new fan motor or the chance of blowing up your motor?
i have an extra fan if you need it...out of an 03
golly joe you are a swell guy.
:blushes: i do what i can
Joe I'm your biggest fan, no pun on the big.
I've been cruising for about 2 years with a dead fan. I need to get a new one too.
ok well i ripped the whole fan not just the motor from the 98 and tested it with a 9 volt battery.. it worked.. i then threw it in my car.. man was that a bitch.. i didnt remove my radiator so it took a lot longer... well i let my car warm up and then drove it around town and what not and then stopped at my friends house.. the engine light is still on and i popped my hood open with the car on still and the fan wasnt spinning!!!!! wtf is going on? could i have killed the new relay?? i left it in while i had the junk fan that wouldnt turn on and i dont know if i killed the relay again but the fan isnt coming on

j/w but what part of maine are you in?? I live in Caribou
Well lets do a little trouble shooting. Before getting the new fan, did you touch the old fan to a battery to see if it was spinning? You should have. Go do it now if possible.
Then your going to want to take the relay and test it...
Grab a voltmeter...
30 is load
85 and 87 are grounds and 86 is the Switch
So first things first.
Put your red lead on 86, turn on the car and then turn on the a/c that should kick the fan signal on. Do you see anything?
If yes Then at least we know its from the relay out.
If no then you have other problems such as the thermostat possibly... or just wireing...fuses
Testing the relay
Then plug everything back in and put your red lead on Pin 30. Do the same thing as before, do you see voltage?
If yes, Then its from the wireing to the fan. So it could either be the fan motor or the wires
If no, then its your relay...replace it and enjoy
i got the fan for free... and it worked because i tested it with a 9 volt battery.. i already put it in also.. and i put the original relay back in and it still doesn't turn on.. when i find a volt meter, i will test your method.. BTW I live in Winslow, ME

There is a fuse box under the hood. It has relays and such as well.

you want to bump, then they will bump and hit real hard and a lot good.
LOL
I drove mine for like 3 months with no fan, if you stop, SHUT IT OFF! Watch the gauge all the time, if it starts climbing turn your heat up on max. I drove mine for a nice lentgh of time, you can't hurt anything if you keep an eye on the gauges and shut it down if it goes high.
The fan isn't on when you look at it probably because the computer hasn't turned it on, if the temp of the engine stays low enough, the fan won't cut in. Also, the fan not working won't cause a CEL.
my problem with that is the temp gauge is broken and whats a CEL? Can i sit at a red lights and wait with it on or do i need to shut it off every light??? Its not that busy because I live in a small town of winslow..

Watch the gauge. You'll know when you need to shut it off.

Dude, I understand your new one works, however, i want you to test the old one, to see if its possible that fan motor works as well...
Then do what i told you.
ok i will try.

after searching for every possible explanation, I check my old fan and it worked.. so I went and look at the relay and noticed there was a fuse for cooling fan and that sucker was blown!!!! thank god I found the problem.

i had to replace the fan in my brothers 99 2.2 and man was that a pain it took like 4 hours to do and i have scars on every knuckle from it
now the lesson i learned from that was unbolt the top motor mount and let the motor rock back it gives you about 3 extra inches of space to work with and
on my 97 z24 it took me like an hour to put the new fan in and put every thing back together
driving fast never killed anyone it was the sudden stop
