Wiring Up an aftermarket hu WITHOUT a class 2 module
Thursday, January 31, 2008 3:47 PM
OK so i checked out the search for a while and cant seem to find a definite answer to my question. I have an 04 cavalier ls coupe and i installed an alpine hu using a class 2 interface. The only problem is that itll work fine for a day or two, then I have to pull the hu out, disconnect the interface, then plug it back in to get it to turn on again. the tech from scosche told me that some hu's pull too much power and that the box cant handle it. My question is how do I wire my hu up without the interface? i don care if i lose chimes, Im just sick of having to constantly pull out the hu! Oh and I dont want to relocate the factory hu either. I have heard there are ways around this but noone seems to want to tell me. THanks for any help!

Theres acouple different ways you can do it,
1) First return that cruddy scosche harness and pick up a metra harness part # 99-2003
2)Take the steering column cover off and tap into either your accessory, starter or ignition wire and wire that to the accessory(Red wire) off the radio. The starter wire is a thick YELLOW wire located in the steering column coming off a harness near your key cylinder, the accessory wire is also a thicker gauge wire that is ORANGE and is located in the same spot,Your ignition wire is a thick PINK wire any of the 3 will work,i would suggest putting a 10amp inline fuse in to be on the safe side so if it pulls to much or you get a short the radio fuse will pop and not an ignition starter fuse
3)If thats to much for you you can also tap into your wiper fuse located in you fuse box,if you looking at the fuse box it is in the lower bottom right of the fuse box.It is a 25 amp fuse, pop the fuse out, wrap the wire around and push the fush back in(make sure its in all the way)you can put a 30 amp in if youd like or again just wire a inline fuse,if you have fuse taps you can also use on of those instead of wrapping the wire around it.
4)Wire up the rest of the harness and your good to go

Hope that helps

YEah i actually had a fused spliced wire already in my car from the first install i had done 2-3 years ago! Crazy thing was i saw that wire before and thought " that dumbass at bestbuy had no clue how to correctly install a hu!" little to my knowledge, he actually did it the right way! So all i had to do was cut the interface off, rewire a metra plug in, replace the 15a fuse on the switched 12v and voila!! now no more damn hassles! No if i could just get my hu to lock into the frame. . . . . . . .

Check my sticky or Lenko's sticky, both will provide you with the answer.

why on earth would you attatch the switched power to your starter wire, that wire only recives power when your starting the car, your accesory wire would be the best bet but you can get away with the ignition wire aswell, but do not use the starter wire becuase the HU will only be on while your cranking the motor

I was having some issues too with the scoche and the insignia headunit from best buy. It was shutting off on me. So i returned it. I went to a Xtreme car audio and they hooked up my kenwood headunit without the scoche and my kenwood is working great with no problems and no bull@!#$ chimes.

Take that scosche harness out of your car and throw it in the garbage or put it on ebay and buy a GMRC01. If you dont want the chime feature then open the case of it and cut the wire going to the chime. Problem solved.

If you don't want the chime feature why buy that harness at all?

The only thing you would gain without the chime is the radio would stay on for a bit until you open the door...
