all of a sudden, burning out leds?
Sunday, February 03, 2008 8:42 AM
ok well set up some relays (5 relays) to make it so i could use a channel off my keyless to turn on my underglow.. here is the diagram..
http://www.the12volt.com/12voltimages/latchonoffspnd.gif

well i have it hooked up right and for the source that i want to turn on, i just added with my rocker switch that has a led in it.. well i got 6 rocker switches, all with leds and the ground for the led's are all hooked together on the switches.. i hooked them up and it seems what ever led i leave on for a while, the led burns out.. like for my fogs, that burnt out, for my amp fans, that burnt out.. and since the led on the another set of leds for my distribution block is on a negative wire, the led never worked... what should i do?? also when the car is on, i can flick the switch to turn on my underglow but when i go to shut the switch off, it shuts off but the underglow is still on.. i have to shut it off with my remote also....

to sum it all up, the leds in the switch started burning out when i hooked up all the relays... so as of now, i disconnected the constant power to the relays..

what voltage are your leds? if they're burning out, then you're throwing too much voltage at them.

well thats weird. the ebay link does claim that they are 12V. but one thing i do notice, is that the input switch you're supposed to be giving the relays is NOT a constant on/off switch (like the link you posted), its supposed to be a momentary switch. how exactly did you wire this?

Judging by what you said in your first post, you hooked up the set of relays to your keyless, but also ran a wire to the same set of relays from your switch?

If so, then as Viper said, you need to replace that rocker switch with a momentary. Instead of shutting off with your keyless, try turning the switch on and off a second time. It should turn the glow off.

I'm a little confused at why someone would make the set up of multiple relays in order to make it a latching on/off, rather than using a latching relay. I don't believe there are any automotive latching, but you can use a single small latching relay to activate a single momentary relay.

now that you say that about the momentary switch, it makes sense.. i took it off that switch and it solely on my keyless now.. the only reason why i went with the relays because i had them.... i didnt check to see if it is still burning out the relays after i removed the switch.. would that have caused that?? because all the grounds on the switches were hooked together just for the little led's

Did you by any chance not have the switch grounded properly? The LED shouldn't actually be in the circuit path with the relay, so that shouldn't have cause it, but if the ground wasn't good, then it may have been getting too much current through it. One way you can help keep the LEDs from blowing is to put a resistor on the ground of the switch, thereby reducing the voltage going through it. Since the switch is rated at 12V, a low value should be fine, like a 56 ohm.

well the thing is, i swapped the switch with another one and it worked for a little and then when i turned to look at it, it was dead again.

ok i dont know if this will help but when i had the regular switch on it, it was a momentary switch for the fogs.. and they have a relay so i think it makes them turn on when i turn on the car.. can i just get rid of this relay?? maybe it is blowing my led's because my switch is preventing the lights to turn on even thought the relay wants them to?

piss i forgot something... the regular switch had 3 wires.. one ground, and the other 2 were power i believe.. all i did was cap off the ground, didnt even ground it out.. and just used the 2 power wires.. is this ok?

power in, power out, and ground. the sole purpose of the ground is to connect a light with power out and ground (turns on when you flip the switch).

and i'm not sure what you meant by your other post.

ok i capped off the ground coming from the the relay that went to the original switch and used my own ground to ground my rockerswitch to have the light come on.. i just hooked up the power and wire from relay up to my switch.

So how did that work out? Are you still blowing LEDs?

no.. its wierd.. maybe my ground is still messed up.. i rewired everything under my dash but the switches all have one wire that all connect to eachother onto another single wire that is connected to the little diag spot (forgot name) as a ground... i used one of the screws... the light for my fogs, sometimes turns on and sometimes turns off.. so i think i was never burning out led's just bad grounds.. but as of now, it is turning on fine..

please tell me the fogs aren't grounded to that metal underneath the dash. the switch ground is fine, but not the fogs.
