wiring up subs/amp some questions.
Wednesday, March 05, 2008 7:29 AM
My current amp right now is a 1000watt Xplod (XM-16522) 2/1 Channel amp
My subs and box is a Bazooka set up I got off my friend cheap, so right now it is what I am using.
they are two 12" 4ohm, single voice coil subs

Right now I'm confused as too the right way to wire them up.

One of my friends told me my subs should be wired as so(showed me the image on the site below);
http://www.crutchfield.com/learningcenter/car/subwoofers_wiring.html?imageID=2SVC%5F4%2Dohm%5F2ch

Another said I should bridge(?) them, as so;
Wiring both negatives, and positives together and wiring them to the positive of one channel, and the negative on the other channel.

And another one told me I should bridge them(?) as so;
Wiring the Positive end of one sub to one channel, and the negative of the other sub to the other channel, and then connect the remaining + and - of the subs together.

Right now I don't have it wired up, until I get a solid answer so I don't damage anything.
I out (?) next to "bridge" because I'm not sure quite what "bridging" the subs really is.
I was told two different ways of bridging them, not sure which is correct.

thanks in advanced to anyone who replies.

are you sure you got the model# of that amp right? i cant seem to find it on sony's wbsite or a manual anywhere on the web. if you have the manual, look in there, it will tell you how to wire it.

don't listen to your friends, cause there is a good chance they dont know how this amp should be wired yet unless they have seen the manual either yet

Actually I searched for the amp myself, and can't find it on there site.

I got it at a pawn shop, so I do not have the manual.
Heres a pic

its actually the 1652Z, not the 16522, which is why i couldnt find any info on it.

anyways, 1652Z Manual

you cant bridge that amp with what you have right now unless you want to put the subs in series, giving you 8 ohms; or run only 1 sub, or not get full power from the amp.

when an amp gives a range of load (ex. 4-8 ohms) the lower you can make the load you put on the amp but stay within that range, the more power it will put out. if you can put 8 ohms on it, you will get half the power out of the amp as you would if you put a 4 ohm load on it.

if you run it bridged in 8 ohms, you will be double the lowest load you can put on that amp, giving you half the power as if you ran it with a 4 ohm load when its bridged.
((400W @ 4 ohms / 2 for double the load) = 200W x 2 subs @ 4ohms = 400 W

if you run it with a single sub bridged, you will get 4 ohms giving you max power, but you will only have one sub.
(400W @ 4 ohms x 1 sub @ 4 ohms = 400W)

if you run it in stereo with 2 x 4ohm loads, you will again get half the power because max power in stereo is at 2 ohms.
(165W @ 4 ohms x 2 subs @ 4ohms each = 330W)

the only way your going to get maximum power out of that amp is to get 2 (two) x 2ohm subs. then you can get 4 ohms with them in series and wire to the amp bridged and get full 800W out.

the values i used above are rated value outputs @ 14.4V rather than max outputs.
