Going to buy some speakers today
Thursday, March 06, 2008 6:55 AM
Woo hoo! Got a bonus at work today. I think I'm going to use it to replace all 4 factory speakers in the '05 Sunfire.

Any recommendations on what'll sound good and not be a complete pain to install? What would sound better in the rear -- 6x9s or 6.5 round ones? Right now I'm running everything off my Alpine CDA-9885 head unit, but I'll probably be getting an amp soon, too.

I hear Sony Xplode is pretty good.
Some people here realy hump the Infinity speakers, but I've never heard them. But the only good thing to do is go down to the shop you are going to buy from and listen to what they have on display. As long as you choose a reputable manufacturer, and do not buy their low-end line, you will be happy.

Big budget: Look into Focal, DLS, Morel, Rainbow.
Medium Budget: Look into Alpine, Infinity, Fosgate, etc.

yes i hump the infinity speakers.....and cream all over em =P

I like em cuz the sound very crispy and the magnet is small so they fit in the door no problem. BUT it all depends on what your ear likes. I think you should definitely go with 6.5 for the door and the back is a toss up between 6.5 and 6x9. Im gonna change the rear speakers soon cuz the stock ones sound like crap hooked up to my amp but im not sure if i should get a another set of comps or a set of 6x9's......sorry if i thread jacked you =\.........

if you dont mind waiting i would say go to like best buy or CC just to hear some speakers and order them online, you could get them cheaper and still listen to them!

Yeah, I stopped over at a couple places the other day and listened to some different ones. Probably will pick them out and then order off Crutchfield.

I kinda like these for the doors: Polk Audio db651s, although they are a little pricer that what I was hoping. (I don't need anything top of the line, just something that sounds nice)

Wow, I see Crutchfield has the Infinity Reference 6022si for $99 -- and if you buy 2 pairs, the 2nd one is 50% off. Wonder how those would sound all around. I'm sure they'd be good in the doors, but I think they might not be so great in the rear deck, probably don't provide much bass.

I had Infinity Reference in my cav. 5.25 up front and 6x9's in the back. They were fine. Better then factory but not the greatest.

I rocked them off the radio at first them amped them later, amped = much better.

i'm running a couple focal polyglass 165's off an alpine mrv-345. very pricey which is not what your looking for but they sound absolutly amazing, for more of a budget i suggest alpine, their type-s and type r-s are very good and if you want to spend a bit more the type-x sound very nice aswell. other than alpine i find kenwood's are pretty good.

That's what subs are for.

lol i'm getting older and don't need that booooooming bass anymore. I'm thinkin when I get some 1/2 way decent speakers in there and need a little more bass I'll buy a nice compact powered sub to toss in there.

everyone i have ever talked to with polk speakers rave about them....

i think they are good speakers....

i have a friend that swears by roadmaster, so it's a to each their own.... i would hit several different audio sellers first... like a best buy & a car toys & then some no name audio dealer & listen to what all them have make a decision based on what sounded best to you & then find them online at a GREAT price, order them, put them in & then never look back (unless your backing up)..... then if they are as good in car as they are in store you'll be smilling, if you go with better highend speakers, always drive them with an amp cause they are gonna sing octives above what they can ever do just connected to your head unit....

& if it's not enough bass, by gum then add you a sub & amp, even if it is a little bazooka 8 with it's own amp....

trust me thats they best way to do this, my car already had after market 6x9 in back speaker area, but dash speakers are busted, so i am still in the process of replacing them... made my decision on what speakers to get, just have to order them (found them at a super great price) & install them along with a new sub, have the amp & box already, but current sub being used is borrowed from my son & dangit, he just got a truck & now he wants it back

oh well 'ce la ve

have fun with it

I've always liked Polk. Bought a Hyundai Sonata about 10 years ago that sounded like crap. I didn't really pay any attention to the stereo system, as I figured I'd have to replace everything. When I took it home and really looked around, I discovered it was just the head unit that was causing all the scratchiness, and it had a 14 speaker Polk Audio system. It sounded awesome when I put a decent h/u in there, along with a pair of subs.

I'm probably gonna go with the slim Polks for the front and some sort of 6x9s in the back. I'll run them off the deck to start with, but probably pick up and amp sooner than later. If there's not enough bass I'll probably just get a powered sub to stick in the trunk. I'm not looking to go all out on this thing, just want to make it sound nice.
