I would test fit a box first if there is one you like. Almost any 2-12" prefabbed sub box will fit in the car whether you have to put it in through the trunk or from the back seat you will be able to get it in there.

I used this one without any issues. It went in from the trunk side with a minimum of hassle, and fits between the strut towers quite nicely.

It's no match for a custom box, but it served my purposes.

Mine is premade and it fits in the trunk perfect and its snug. Nevermind the subs.. they are temps.

TRUE, to an extent.

I have yet to listen to a custom box that significantly outperforms a prefab box with subs thrown in it.
This isn't Rocket-Science, it is near impossible to make a box too big for subs in the confines of a trunk, and
prefab boxes are not so small that they suffocate a sub to drastically underperform. All we are doing is seperating
rear waves of the speaker from the front waves which are produced from both sides of the cone.

Custom boxes are only necessary if you plan to compete, or if the customer is pickey and wants a nice install;
otherwise you are going to have minimal gains of 3-5 dB. The average consumer will not know the difference.

I have to agree. I have a friend who spent all sorts of time designing and building a custom enclosure, and honestly I can't hear any difference in it from the prefab one he used to have in his trunk from Best Buy. If you want everything *perfect* or have a lot of spare time, go ahead and do it. But for most of us the difference in sound doesn't warrant the time and money.

Considering that 3Db is perceived as twice as loud to the human hearing, I think that that is a worthwhile gain. $30-50 to build your own well designed box is quite a bit cheaper then buying a set of better subs and a bigger amp to power them. Since, if everything is equal, it takes 2x the power to double the volume, just a simple box doing that would be a way cheaper route.

Yeah you 2 are right, but you failed to take into account that I was smoking crack when I wrote that.
3-5dB is way to genererous of an estimate. The rest is sound advice.

Trust me, there is a huge difference between a cheapo prefab (or any prefab for that matter) and a properly designed and built enclosure. Thats just plan stupid to say an average consumer wont notice, if anything they will probally be more apt to notice. Either you havnt ever heared the difference between a prefab and a well built and design enclosure or your just deaf.

Hi. I'm Phil Mennitti. Nice to meet you. What shop do you work for?
Where are some photos of your work to lend credibility to your assertion of my stupidity?

you called me stupid (which I am),
and you have no pics of your car/work to back up your theory?

Phil is not the guy to be questioning his credibility, so stop while your not as far behind as you could be.

phil, i agree with you in the fact that most people probably couldnt care less or hear the difference in most cases.

as for gaining 3-5 db... 5 db i doubt is doable unless the prebuilt box you are choosing is way out sized (small or large) for the sub in question. you can choose a pre-fab box that can be pretty damn close to whats required, but testing the parameters of the driver and building the box according to the desired output and range is far better than slapping it into a prebuilt and finding out those parameters can actually even aid you in selecting a better prebuilt.

as for me, my sub gained about 3-4 db by building in the enclosure its in. its in a 4th order bandpass thats sized at about 1.5 cubic feet and a port tuned according to the output and range that the sub needs to be played in. seeing as im only feeding it 60W RMS, essentially doubling the power by improving the output was very beneficial to me.

i also did something similar in a school project. here is the comparison between the driver in its original enclosure, the new enclosure, and the new enclosure with the custom built shelf filter. note, this is not a sub, its a midrange driver.

the enclosure went from about .4 cubic feet and poorly ported to about .3 cubic feet and sealed. material changed from 1/4 partical board to 3/4 mdf.

and lastly...

Just because i joined this site yesterday and im only 20 that means i am a total fawking noob? Age, post count, and join date have nothing to do with my knowledge of car audio.

You said its pointless to build a custom enclosure that isnt well designed, i totaly aggree there but who says he doesnt have room for a proper built enclosure.

Thanks, just cause im new to this site doesnt mean i know nothing. Yes this is Corey and after viewing your account ik you from ROE. Im sorry to the OP for getting so off topic on your thread but its a difference in opion. Im a pure bass head, im into spl and he more into the show thing. Its all great, its just not my thing, were spl might not be his thing. Sorry for starting any @!#$ but I just totaly dissagree that there isnt much gain between a prefab and proper designed enclosure. If you want ill do a huge test between some enclosures using the same driver, and my TL.
