Anyone running 10's in the doors for Midbass?

Im thinking of doing some slim 10" speakers in some glass door pods, with mid and tweeters down in kicks.

I dont really have the time and desire to fabricate kicks at this time either soif anyone has a pair of Qlogic kick panels for sale, or knows a place to get a good deal please let me know. None of our distributors carry the product line unfortunately.

I have used 10's for midbass in some high out put applications but it might be a little over kill for what your looking to do. What is your front stage and bass fill consist of? I suggest scaling it back to a single 8" midbass driver per door.

Hey Corey.

I actually recognize your name from other forums.

Im Alex who works for eD. This is actually going into my personal car, Im going to use SQ10s as midbass drivers running somewhere from 220-120hz down to 50hz, depending on what works out best after I get the doors built up. I will then have 2 15's IB. Im looking more so to do something unique and fun. With the CDA-9887, i will be able to shut off the substage and drop the sq10 bandbass crossover to run as the substage as well.

Im actually using the active settings on the 9887 highs for the kick panel two way, which will consist of a passive crossover component set, and use the amplifiers crossovers to high pass them down to around 200hz, since the 9887 only allows you to go down to 1000hz.

Alex,

From the specs of the SQ10, it does seem like it would make a desent IB midbass driver. Also sence your already glassing the doors, why not glass the mid from the comp set in the door also? Keep that tweeter up nice and high, the sail panel, a-pillar, or even up high on the door. You gonna run a DLS comp set? Are you gonna drop the crossovers and run them fully active? Pretty solid plan so far tho.

I had the Phoenix Gold TI9Elite drivers in my doors which were some strange cm measurement just under 10", then switched to smaller Focal 180W drivers and there is no comparisson. The better quality speakers pound harder and play a greater range. Don't be afraid to go 8" if you get a quality speaker.

I also like my tweeters high, which gets me into trouble with my tuner everytime I see him. He insists they should be within 3" of the midrange in the kicks to avoid wave issues. But it is a trade off up high for some stage and image improvements. The sail panels are an easy install, but you will be very near side biased if you are concerned with any sound quality or tuning plans. Mine are in the pillars and I have to use time delay.

There honestly isnt a whole lot of room on the door. Im going to be lucky to fit the SQ10 on the door, and I still have to convert the car over from manual windows.

I plan to do a semi-active setup with the 9887 consisting of the following:

High: 650 tweeter with 6500 crossover. The mid will either be a 6 or 5.25" that will play into mid-high 4khz range. The 6500 crossover used a high crossover point, and I need to find something that will work well with that. My 650 mids are raped from the past 4 years of overpowering and being in and out of many vehicles. This made me decide to do something else, mixed with the fact that 6500s are no longer produced. Ive alway liked the really laid back sound of the silk 650 tweeter so I want to keep it. I the past Ive had the 6500 tweeters up on the dash and had best results vs. in the doors of the cavalier. I want to put the mid and tweets in kicks, just because im not sure I can fit a mid in the door with the Sq10s as well. Another reason for keeping the mid and tweet together is for the Imprint setup with the 9887. Im really excited about using the Alpine Audessey Imprint tuning setup, and I dont want to fudge up the sound from the system recognizing a mid in the door, and tweeter up high, but thinking that its all one speaker. They will be high passed between 150-250hz depending on needs.

Bandpass: This will be an SQ10 in each door being setup on the 9887 as the "mid" but the infinitely variable crossovers will allow me to bandpass them from 50hz to mid 100's or a little higher.

Low: The lows will likely be two 16Ov.2s IB from 50hz and down.

I would like to do a set of DLS comps, but really dont have a lot of money right now, and im sick of having a car torn apart for the last 2 years.

Ive never had an IB setup and Im not really looking for anything insanely loud anymore, just more fun than anything.

I'm not saying that the DLS speakers are not any good because we sold them and liked them, but for the price you should think about Focal. Keith Doney, Steve Head, Keith Turner (all National Champions) left Focal for sponsorships with DLS and went back to Focal the next year. They all said the Focal speakers sound quality was so much more realistic.

I would have went with DLS, just because we sell them.

The focal sets I have heard had a little brighter top end than I like. Not saying thats a bad thing, just not what I like. Only tweeter I have really liked from DLS was the Iridium.

Wouldn't eD 7kv.2 or 9kv.2 be better suited (space wise) for your constraints? 10 drivers, even shallow ones, would be a PITA to work in there and still have a place to put your legs and/or sit.

Either way, can't wait to see what comes out of this.

I'm thinking the same thing. I've done setups with an 8 in the door before, but a 10 just doesn't seem reasonable.
If you do it, I'd definitely go with the 5.25 instead of the 6.5 for the mids. They should do the job better with the 8 or 10 mid bass. When I used the 8 for the mid bass, I used 4's for the mids, but 5.25 will probably work fine.

If you go through with it, I'm curious to see the outcome. I tend to like things that are out-of-the box thinking, even if I don't think it's going to work properly.

I dont want to use the 7kv.2 or 9kv.2 as I want something different.

As for depth, the SQ10 is actually going to work better than both of those other drivers.

I should be starting on sound deadener/ fiberglass in the upcoming month, if Iowa weather starts to clear up.

i think your biggest issue will be the deadoning. i'd look into some non-hardening clay for down low and a ton of dampening. i have issues with my 6.5's in the doors and ive got 3 layers on the outter door. two layers on the inside of the inner panel and a couple layers on the outside of the inner panel. the vibrations in these doors suck.

What exactly do you mean by issues? And are you running a lot of power to your 6.5s

I have a total of around 25lbs of damping material in the first door that I did. The one thing that I am worried about is the hinges.

im only running about 75 watts to them but when you have doors that are as thick as aluminum cans. im having thoughts of moving my 6.5's to the dash since im redoing the dash and just leave the dash bare. if i can get enclosures big enough i'll be able to run them down in the 50hz range hopefully and get some ufb

Well I snagged some Q-logic kick panels from a company. Should be starting in the next 2 weeks.

Selling them for around dealer cost, and ships directly from Q-logics parent company. If anyone wants the link, shoot me a PM.

I have 5 1/4's in kicks and a set of 6 1/2's to go into the doors. I have a set of 8's in the back deck for midbass and it sounds pretty darn good.
